yes if you can believe it Lash the clacking firehygrant is finally working on a new suit. i know please take your heart medication now. lol! dont get me wrong tho that suit as seen over 50 wars and has been put thru the ringer with me ,as i am a shield wall crashing fool ,with no injuries. new sendai-do this is the first layer of color and shaping process before final color and hardening. i went with leather because i dont care for metal . it is going to be a very plain do as i am a plain guy . the only concern i have is how im going to attach the side pieces to the do ' in my model they use piano hinge but i dont think that will hold up to what i will put it thru any suggestions? i am very excited .

Hmmm, what about cutting another strip of leather as your "hinge" and riveting it to either side of the seam?

Actually, that page specifically mentions using piano hinges, but it does mention lacing the hinges on instead of riveting them in place.

I simply used leather laced in as hinges...

I have worked with leather for many years always found that when you are attaching leather to leather, stitching it together is waaaay better than rivets. The sweat gets under the rivet heads and rots out the leather, making it loose and eventually coming apart. To make the stitching easier, line up the two leather pieces, mark a series of matching holes down both sides - the holes being about 1/4" apart. Glue your leather "hinge" on to the back side. Punch through all those hole marks with a drill press. The drill bit size should be just big enough to pass your needle and thread through - sort of a tight fit. Then take some artificial sinew and stitch the rows of each sides to your hinge. It will never rot out, looks good, and wont break. If you ever need to change it just take a box cutting knife and slice all the stitches out in one go. I use this method all the time for other armor and have great results.

I always thought Mykaru's example was pretty sexy: I'm very sad that he's apparently no longer making helmets.

Pallidus-dono you are correct in sewing being much stronger . i am a leather smith so have all the tools for sewing and tooling and i had thought about sewing them but was trying to figure out how to hide the stitching . i was thinking of dyed sinew and just lace over it all the way down as in the do edges of my model . i do like the idea of lacing more than piano hinge so i will experiment a little with some scrap .
