In Kendo, they wear a tenugui (hand towel) wrapped around their heads. The practice dates back to the Edo period, I don't know if they wore something similar prior to that. I wore one for a while, but it kept slipping down over my eyes, so now I just use a normal bandana tied in the back.

On a side note, I happened to have found and purchased an antique copy of the Tanki-Yoriaku recently, it has all the original Japanese text and images, I will scan and post a copy of all the pages.

Ah, the famous JoAnn "Fabricy Materialessence". (I'm not making fun of you, I'm making fun of JoAnn. Oh JoAnn, why can't I quit you?) Where anything with the name "Silk" or "Silky" contains no silk whatsoever. GAH!
