I've been wanting to add a tanto to my kit as a secondary weapon. This desire was reinforced by the Prince of Trimaris who killed my quite effectively with one while I was spear dueling him during the Trimarian challenges at Pennsic. So, instead of packing like a well-focused bushi, I made this tonight. Tanto is 15" in length with a low profile thrusting tip, small tsuba, and a non-slip tape 'same'. But making the tanto was easy, what I really needed was a way to wear it. My first saya was just a hair too small. The naked-rattan tanto slid in and out with just about the right resistance, but when taped it was impossible to pull out. Searching for a new saya, I found that a saran-wrap roll provided a wonderfully stiff cardboard tube with just the right diameter! The koshiate is made from plastic and will be attached to my uwa obi.

That's damn sex-ay! Beautiful work. I love how it's curved.
I have a tanto in my kit, but haven't had the presence of mind to use it yet.

Very nice. I would not have thought to add the saya and koshiate - for simplicity sake i tuck mine in the small of the back, or under the ebira if i am shooting CA...I have used mine on good occaision, in some reasonably high level tournaments... It is especially effective when people do not see you use it often, and then you whip it out while in a close spear clench and jam it in their armpit or grill... Tadaaaa...suprise! You been daggered! People hate death due to a weapon they overlooked! Date

I''ve seen Sir Brand MacClellan whip a rattan "boot dagger" out and nail people when they least expect it. A-freakin-mazing.

Very attractive. And useful - I hope that I will have the privilege of seeing you wield it.

longlife.city.hikone.shiga.jp/museum/letter/71_05.htmlJust looking for a place to post this pic of what I think is a koshi-ate. It's interesting that I noted that a Prince of Trimaris was my initial impetus for making the tanto since I got to play spear with Sir Gaston of Trimaris during GW who reminded me of the need to keep a short blade close to hand ...

That is the quite likely the most beautiful list-legal weapon I have ever seen(then again I have seen only so many of them and few that look good). When you say that, does that mean you have discovered how to imitate same with tape?

Otagiri-dono,
love the tanto......beautiful and deadly.
Seeing it reminds me of many times I could have used a short blade....particularly in a polearm to greatsword clinch with a certain unspeakably large Frank of my acquaintance.
A question, tho, I can see its use in a war setting, but what would the etiquette be in a tournament setting? Would you have to declare the presence of the tanto to your opponent..... I'd think going one on one and then whipping the tanto out in a clinch and nailing them might be construed by some people as a mite rude..... effective but rude. ;D

P.S. Someone is going to have to follow our beloved moderator to his next war with a video camera. I've seen lovely still photos but I'd love to see film footage of him in action ;D

If you keep the tanto in the front, I would make sure to at least gesture to it before the fight or mention it directly if you have a short time to talk to your opponent. If they follow me, all you'll have are pics of my rear.

Not really. There is a type of tape known as "non-slip" used on stair steps that has sand bonded to it. This creates a non-slip grip for swords which I call "same" since it fills the same purpose.

Note to self, watch Sir Brand's fights at Crown this weekend and see if he shanks anybody with his rattan boot dagger. I'm almost positive the last time I saw him do it was in a tourney......
