And if I do make it out to Pennsic ... Will anyone out there know how to use a yumi? ;) It seems I have this new bow and no training ...

There is no shortage of yumi, both real and combat in the camp of Yama Kaminari. This humble samurai serves his Daimyo with two, and will likely end up with a combat yumi while at Pennsic. We also have the ear of Jaap Koppedrayer (Yumi himself) Master Bowmaker and a very good Kyudoka who often does demo's for us. I am sure you will find some tutalage...

Otagiri-dono,

If you haven't seen it yet, get your hands on a copy of "Kyudo: The Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery" by Hideharu Onuma, Dan De Prospero and Jackie De Prospero. Back when I was shooting regularly and Fujimaki was lusting after yumi, he made me read it his copy. Lots of good information on basics of technique, plenty of illustrations and photos, etc. Also of interest is Onuma's "Illuminated Spirit." It covers some of the same ground but gets into the zen of shooting.

If my life settles sufficiently and the budget allows, I may have to visit some of the dojos in the South Bay. SCA target archery (specifically the speed rounds) taught me target panic. Add to that a period during which it hurt to shoot because of repetetive stress problems in my left wrist. Even after it healed, I'd flinch on the release because I was expecting it to sting. I got so burned out and frustrated I haven't shot in about three years. I think kyudo might be good for me mentally.

I refused the trip to Germany.

I am considering my shelter options. I could bring a dome tent or two. I just despise them.

For camping I usually bring a 20' yurt or sleep in a van. For an impromptu hike in the Applachians a few years back, I bought a 15$ kids pup plastic pup tent. Worked okay.

For Pennsic, I am thinking of bringing 4 army shelter-halves (which would cover about 7'x10' + ropes). Too little? Or is it obvious that I have never slept in a army shelter and should just bring the dome tent?

Advice appreciated.

If it rains like it did the last few years, you'll want a pontoon boat to camp on. Last year several camps near the lake wear flooded up to knee high. Rule of thumb; It always rains at least once at pennsic, no matter what.

Otagiri-dono,
Are you going to stay with your Kingdom, or are you staying with the Yama Kaminari? I have a dome tent that, even though hated, would be one less thing you have to haul...
Let me know

Date-dono ...

I am very grateful for Yama Kaminari's invitation and glady accept. And the offer of a tent! That is extremely gracious and I humbly accept your offer of the dome tent. I feel somewhat like the 14th century Takezaki Suenaga, arriving with no horse and no retainers - little to seperate myself from any common man.

Quite a lot of you, if the YK have their way. (I just hope Frederick remembers to make that delivery.....)

It occurs to me that I've borne witness to the festival at a few long past Pennsics, thus seeing friends I didn't know I had at the time with very little on. Ow. :o Brain cramp!

Have fun! Me, hopefully, I will have found an apartment by then and be in the throes of a move.

A group of fundoshi-clad men carrying something for a fertility festival.... Kannon preserve one and all!

It sounds like a train wreck: something one doesn't want to see, but can't help watching.

In smooth radio DJ voice: Hey! This is WTMI and we'll be right back after these messages...

I will be camping with my lord the Baron of the Far West, enjoying the hospitality of HRM the King of Drachenwald. Unfortunately, I will not be able to fight in Japanese kit, but will attend court & hang about in Japanese. There will be two others from the Far West/ Avalon doing the same - Baron Stephan/ Tadanori and Lady Yukitsune. Tenzen-dono will be doing all Japanese, all the time. These three are all really Japanese. If you are interested in yumi, you might ask Lady Yukitsune - she has studied some kyubajutsu and won two tournaments for beginners. This will of course be different from kyudo, so if you prefer that more contemplative style of yumi...

Anyway, stop by the Drachenwald camp and say hello.

Say, should we have a Tousando nomikai some night?

Leaving for Pennsic this aftenoon...After a grueling loadout, and a terrible trek of a half hour, I will begin the equally grueling unload and setup...(sigh!) ;) Spent the weekend making a nice yellow and orange silk suikan kamishimo for my squire brother and great great grand son Date no Genshiro Toshinobu as a gift for him to wear at court. He will be in direct service to the Royalty of Aethelmearc this War, so we gotta make sure he looks good! Between that and his new helmet, he should be stylin!
I'll post pics later this afternoon, before I leave.
