Those are completely drool-worthy. I must investigate this Ichiroya.
(five minutes later)
Oh doom. Doom with a side of doom sauce and doom sprinkles.
Serious question -- what are some good rules of thumb to determine "plausible for SCA-period"? I have been having the hardest time finding art from the Kamakura period to look at for examples. Everything I find seems to be later period. (Actually, that's enough of a question that I think I'll break it out into a separate thread, as well ... )

I use two guiding principles:
a) Does it look a lot like something I've seen? I see tons of plaid, big bold stripes, and solid underlayers in art, so those are all okay as far as I can tell. I've also seen a lot of woven damask patterns from sources like the Costume Museum, so I have treated those as being safe.
b) Could they have done it with period methods? If it's something like plaid that you can just do with weaving, then I generally feel less bad. If it's a complicated dye job with tons of detail like, say, this costume piece (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tomlapille/6620663491/), I stay away.
A is more important than B, and I only use B as a tiebreaker on whether to get something I really like a lot or not.
The purple bolt is an example of that for me--I liked it a lot, purple bolts get bought very quickly, and I need a purple bolt for a costume piece. The square pattern is close to plaid, it's mostly a woven technique, and the embellishment bits aren't implausible even though I haven't specifically seen anything like that in paintings. That's close enough that I wouldn't be embarrassed to wear it at an SCA function, even though that wasn't the primary purchase motivation.

You have the BEST shopping karma, though I have to say I have a vintage hanhaba obi that resembles the plaid.

Thank you, Ishida-dono. That's really helpful. (: I'll keep it in mind when I am fabric-hunting.

Way to make me feel like a complete slacker. ;-D I'm barely unpacked from Twelfth Night and you're banging out new threads. That's going to go nicely with your green kamishimo.

Awesome, fast work. I should do more work with stripes. I bet they make it easier to keep cuts and seams straight.

Awesome, fast work. I should do more work with stripes. I bet they make it easier to keep cuts and seams straight. Oh boy do they. The patterns on these bolts don't normally turn out to be as regular as you want them to, so you end up choosing where you put the pattern mismatch, but it definitely helps with cutting.

With regard to the time, I was under a little pressure for this. I'm guest-star-NPCing an L5R LARP this weekend, and I wanted this piece for that. Things like that are a great reason to get things done quickly, as I'm sure you're familiar with. With regard to the green kamishimo, they would work together better if the kamishimo were a little lighter. The contrast between the two is a little stronger than I was hoping it would be. To boot, the yellow on this is annoyingly close to the orange on the kamishimo I was intending to wear it with this weekend. I was hoping for visible contrast, and as it is it's very-close-but-not-the-same. Oops. At least the piece is nice!

Ah, you're going to Weekend in Rokugan? I was wondering when you mentioned the purple as a costume piece. Have fun! Wish I could go ... I'm still writing up my character for local play!

As to the colors, bold and annoying is very Japanese, which is why I like to blind my friends by wearing that orange thing I had on Saturday night with the bright pink shibori kosode over it. I'm sure it'll be fine. Just as I'm sure you'll show us the finished result.

I guess if you ask that nicely, I'll cross the streams a little bit. Look out for posts the next two nights. If you haven't had a look at this thread, you might want to stop by there for a look-see too. EDIT: Also this, from the same project as the linked page.

Lion kamishimo with plaid kosode by tomlapille, on Flickr This picture isn't great. I'll try to get a better one of the hitatare kamishimo tomorrow. The plaid kosode is particularly gorgeous in the sun. It's quite shiny, and I look forward to wearing it at camping events where I'm actually outside a lot.
