I didn't *dare* post this in the Washoku forum. * cooked brown sticky rice (I used 1 rice-cooker cup's worth) * 4 strips bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled * 2 Tbsp vinegar mixed with 1/2 tsp. salt and about 3/4 Tbsp. sugar * nori for wrapping Mix the hot sticky rice with the vinegar, folding gently. Work in the bacon crumbles evenly. Shape into rice balls (I made log-shaped ones), wrap in nori ... and plan to take them to Potrero for lunch. (; I'd like to put green onions in them next time, I think. Just didn't plan that far ahead. Now I shall wander off to commit seppuku for the heresy of bacon in rice balls ...

My rule of thumb question is usually "Would a 16th century Japanese nobleman have thought this was awesome?" If the answer is yes, I never feel that bad. I think this is safe.

My chicken teryaki onigiri isn't period either, but it has been dubbed "crack" by a number of my friends.

Reminds me of when I make sushi "hoagies". Why take all the time of grabbing ridiculously small bites of gari and wasabi when you can just tuck it all in the maki with everything else?
Though you've inspired me, So. I may have to make cucumber bacon futomaki with spicy mayo in the near future...

In the non-bacon-but-not-period category (well, until we figure out what that supposed cheese product was), you can make a very tasty (if rather pink) onigiri filling from cream cheese, minced umeboshi, minced green onion, and a splash of tamari. That was lunch! Yum!

Don't feel bad, Aneue-shonagon. I've become infatuated with bibimbop as of late, yet can't seem to resist adding cheese to balance out the kimchee.

The new teppanyaki place near me (in Pittsburgh) has bacon wrapped grilled mochi. It's not traditional but it's awesome.
