Nice. I also like the title... Date's Tate (or 'Date no Tate') ;)

I need to get mine out and get them painted. I can see that Takeda and I used a similar construction idea for the stand, but you have a crosspiece that appears to be attached to the kickstand--may I ask what that is for? Is it to keep the kickstand from wobbling?

Yes, my friend, the "T" part on top of the leg is just to keep it from wobbling. I need to put my kamon on them still, and perhaps make a few more if time and $ permit...

You know, I need either fewer squires (and their retainers) or a bigger back yard. Last weekend people were working on the buke yashiki, 2 tate, 300 combat arrows, general armor maintenance and 2 kabuto.

At every chivalry vigil I make a point of telling the candidate that squires are an expensive hobby. I need to listen to my own advice.

These are the bomb!

Is there anything special done down at the foot?

I'm going to move this thread over to Heiho.

Shamelessly swiping Date's pattern, I made two tate for myself last night and painted them to match his. Then I got to thinking about needing to make 'combat tate' for the static battles, and it occured to me that I already *had* tate. I went out to Home Depot and bought some pipe insulation, slipped it over the edge of the wood, added duct tape and admired my work.

Oh-- Date and Saiaiko-- I bought enough pipe insulation for you, too.

My understanding was that the SCA didn't allow 'free-standing' shields, and that was the problem with tate... but checking I can't find that rule. Was I misled, or have the rules changed?

Ii-dono,
It is my understanding that a free standing shield is legal for CA use if it has all of the characteristics of a regular shield...it must have a handle, and it must have edging. Tate can be made to function in that way...
This is how it has been explained to us from the AE. EM and other sources.

The archers of Yama Kaminari (including me) used the tate we made during the bridge battle at Pennsic. I'm happy to report that they worked perfectly, and that no less than five crossbow bolts aimed at me bounced off them.

I'm going to take a deep breath and try to force this out between my clenched teeth-- Shields..... are..... g..g..g..g...good things... to... h... h... have.
