Thank you for the kind words, gentlemen. I will say, now that there're a couple of pictures of me up from the Tuchux tourney, I can safely say I agree - it doesn't look half bad. Once again, credit goes to Makiwara for intuiting its construction. As for the armour, Otagiri-dono, it's 1/8th inch HDPE. I am currently trying to decide what to do about it. I have just started to call it ablative armour, because for about every four hours I spend fighting in it, I find another solid break somewhere. That ain't so good. I can't decide yet whether to try to get Toastygawa to make me another one in a more solid material, to make my own in plastic (which is a disaster waiting to happen), or to make that tateage dou - like yours - I've been thinking about. (And, if I make a tateage dou, the next issue is whether I can get away with 18ga mild, which I have tons of in my apartment, or if I have to go up to 16ga.) Any thoughts or advice would be lovely. No apologies for highjacking the thread. And for another example of taking hits, me in the semi-finals of the tourney:

From that particular photo it looks like you are a practitioner of the "Not-in-Face!"-ryu.
Sorry, could not resist.

Haha... there are more bad@ss pictures of me out there, but you know, humility is important. And hey, Not-In-The-Face-Ryu has gotten me a lot more than Run-Far-Far-Away-Ryu or Curse-Gaijin-And-Their-Shields-Ryu...

Haha... there are more bad@ss pictures of me out there, but you know, humility is important... Where did you get this idea? [tongue-in-cheek]You must ensure that your lord and the bakufu commanders are aware of your deeds, the battles you have fought, the men-of-worth you have killed in order to apply for the correct rewards. We don't just fight for honor, you know. There's the shiki, the stipend, the cool court-appointments, and the land to consider. The squeeky wheel gets the grease.[/tongue-in-cheek]

"Renown is a funny thing....." Takezaki Suenaga denied, of course, that he sought the Court's favor for the rewards but rather just to keep morale up in the case of a future invasion. www.samurai-archives.com/suenaga.html

"Hey, now THAT's badass:" - you didn't hear it from me, folks. Wisdom speaks for itself, and Makiwara speaks for wisdom. Takezaki Suenaga was one clever dude... not that I'm implying that I copied his tactic here, just sayin'. Otagiri-dono, I couldn't get your opinion about the question I posed at the top of this page, could I?

And, if I make a tateage dou, the next issue is whether I can get away with 18ga mild, which I have tons of in my apartment, or if I have to go up to 16ga. Having fought with my tatehagi dou for a couple of fighter practises, I think it is dang near bulletproof. The front, remember, is made of overlapped 16ga (or slightly heavier) plates. The back is made of 18 ga. I suspect that an 18ga front would take a few dents from well struck shots. My first metal dou, a sendai-dou type, was pretty boxy, with well defined 'edges' where the plates met at a distinct angle. This is where my last armour dented the most - to the point where the hinges became difficult. And there were no overlaps. Could you make an all 18 ga dou? Sure. It's field-life will be longer if the plates meet at less of an angle. You likely get some dents, but the overlapped plates do add a lot of strength. Should you make an all 18 ga dou? That's a risk that's up to you ... but my next tatehagi dou will be all 18 ga.

At this point, I have to ask... Did the cowl keep your helmet cooler?

LOL... I actually found a veil thing that I had sewn up to use as an Arabic persona and went, "Okay, same thing.. I can use this as the pattern!
I just have to enlarge the pattern so it covers the proper parts of the helmet. I'll get the white spray paint in a few.

I still have not gotten around to doing one up, I like the look of them, and it is pretty simple to cover a western helm and it imrpoves the look so much...
Granted I don't have a helm that lends itself to it... yet more motivation to get my spangen done.
