Ok, so I came across some free fabric[1] and I'm thinking of making a nice winter coat out of it. I do remember starting a thread about Japanese winter wear last season but I can't seem to find it. I found a still from an anime [2] that shows a character in winter wear but it's probably not accurate. So would a padded linen coat in a kimono like cut be appropriate for the merchant class? I know the "beautiful people" would just layer... Also, what would be worn in the winter footwear wise? Around October, it gets too cold for geta at events... [1]Um... I was...er...walking down the street... And er, someone had put out some junk on the corner. In the box, was a perfectly good (no stains, no mold) linen shower curtain... I'm going to keep an eye on the boxes to see if anyone puts out a sign, saying they want it back but if not... mine! mine! mine! [2]I remember reading something about padded jackets made out of indigo died fabric and sashinko keeping it together...Anime still www.designchronicle.com/memento/archives/mushishi_ep15.htmlscroll down a bit.

Ah, thanks. For some reason, when I look for an old thread where I asked a question, I can't seem to find it via the search function...
I am only planning on using linen because I found it[1]. Anyway, so there wouldn't be a specialized short, padded kimonoid garment for use as a coat in the Heian era? Figured it would be a good project to do for the upcoming October event. As for the boots, hmn, look complicated but, well, my other option is wearing my hiking boots... which, er, I did once[2] and it didn't look to great...
Unless you have any other interesting projects that could use a curtain's worth of pale sage linen...
[1]Please don't think I am a garbage rat- it was sittingin a bin of other household items such as a vase etc. I think it's pretty common where I live- I've seen so many piles of household items with signs of "please take" on them or just random items on the curb that seem to be left there for the taking. It's kind of strange... [2]Brisk, in the lower sixies, overcast and outside all day. You seriously expect me to wear sandals? (;

Anyway, so there wouldn't be a specialized short, padded kimonoid garment for use as a coat in the Heian era? The answer to that question is darned if I know. The only short coatlike garment from that period I can think of is a karaginu (translates as "Chinese jacket") and that's worn with the full Monty. How about an unobtrusive flat heeled ankle boot? (Accent on unobtrusive.) Or geta/zori with tabi. Make a pair double thickness with something warm on the inner layer, nobody has to know.... Whyever not? There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Out here, that's still sandal weather.

Noble Cousins!
Greetings from Solveig! "Hanten" are padded. I'm not at all sure how old they are. Silk is much warmer than you might suspect. Also, wafuku in general is much warmer than you might expect. As for footwear. Geta are a kind of foul weather wear. They can be worn during the rainy season. However, if there is snow, then you want to wear lined straw boots. Incidentally, the famous foul weather cape is called a mino. Or so do I recall.

Well, I don't know where I'm going to find straw boots. I do have a pair of dark leather boots in a very similar shape (I call them my "dexter boots" because they look like the ones worn by Dexter, on "Dexter's Lab."
A quick google shows that happi coats anyway are from the Edo era but I'm not showing up anything for hanten that gives me any history. It couldn't have been that hard for someone to come up with a hanten coat... I was just thinking of making a short, hip length kimonoid jacket and then buying some thin batting from the local fabric store. I have leg warmers that I made earlier in the year (though they keep falling down... I'll have to find better ties).
