I fought sword and board for four years before finally switching over to pole-arm. I was mediocre at best with it. It did let me gain the melee head that i needed to be able to do my job in the house. I can see the arguement both ways on this, Tactically, having fought with that style regardless of sword and board, two stick, etc... does help in identifying weak points in a defence.
The best thing i can say to those who think that they can only be knighted on sword and shield is this; Look at Sir Randolph, Sir Tinntabulum, and Sir Daniel of the Lakes, all Midrealm knights who were belted for their pole-arm work. If you don't want to do sword and board, don't.

A thousand thank yous to His Majesty May He Reign For A Thousand Years In Glory for that disturbing image. Fortunately the SCA is safe, what with residency issues, budget and the fact that I don't believe either of us fight.

I think anyone who doubts their ability to progress in the SCA because of being samurai needs to mount on their armor a copy Nissan's sashimono- "I'll kill you, you son of a bitch!"

Hehehehe, I have been thinking about doing one that says "Corner Soba, fresh noodles" or something along those lines. My uma-jirushi reads: "Buddha teaches life is suffering, I make it so"

Wait a tick, how the hell did I get involved in this.
Well, if I can get my act in gear, not for long, 'hime.

Sanjuichiro, Although I was not Knighted as a Samurai, I play at being one at War. I wanted to do a fulltime Samurai persona when I started this game, but found that it would be a bumpy road in Atlantia. In southern Atlantia there were no Samurai that were fighters, Knights or otherwise. Yoshi, was the only one close. So I took the easy way and conformed. However, I did autho with a pole weapon first. I knocked the block off Duke Logan, and passed very quickly. I went ahead and authoed in all weapons forms that first year as to get it out of the way so I could play at whatever I felt like, or was needed too. There have been a few knights in At. Knighted for their non WS forms. Not a lot. When I became a knight, I decided to play Samurai at all war, and multi-fighter, melee events, because, I could, and because I wanted other people that wanted to be Samurai, to know that there was at least one Knight in Atlantia that was playing Samurai, at least part time. It is very tough to be competitive in big Atlantian tourneys as a fulltime Samurai. Unless you are a pole, or greatsword God. And if you can be that, you would be a knight in short order. I think that my skills with the pole, and spear, had a lot to do with me getting knighted, so keep working at it. Look me up, and we can talk. I'm not realy sure how my brother Atlantian Knights feel about my Samurai conversion. They do know that I will fight my best for our kingdom all the time. And Those that know me best, know that I do this, for the love of the game, and every day of SCA fighting is another day in paridise for me. You can become a Knight of Atlantia as a Samurai. You could even be a master if you wanted. There is no law against it. Beat up the knights, in the weapons that you want to use. Be a force to be noticed at war. And the Knights will see you. Marc

Hey Marc. There are a number of us trying to plow that road. I'm glad that you have seen the light and strive to clear the shmutz out of the way. No samurai. I've been playing since 1988. Albeit not doing a reasonably decent job until recently. The knights maybe unsure of your transformation, but most of the folks I see think you look great and appreciate the look that you bring to the field. They to will be assimilated.

I am flattered, but if you wish to "progress" in the SCA do not emulate me, I am only a brigand and a leader of brigands.

Sorry I could not make it Saturday Marc. :-/Nate had a inner ear virus from Friday till who knows when so I stayed at home with him so Bryn could finally go to an event and have some fun. She even left her bag pipes at home so she could socialize. I wish that I could have gone and drooled all over your stuff. I 'll make it next time you have the class, hint, hint. ;)I have an interest and want to get your advice on doing some of the shaft work for the yari head I've got.

Wait a tick, how the hell did I get involved in this. It would be quite amusing to have a double cross-dessing couple on a throne. Corpora just says one man, one woman...
