I've had this as a child and growing up-it's basically a puffed rice "candy". Not sure how period it is tho.(the candy-not the recipe.) ;D
Okoshi
1/2 cup butter (1 block) 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup Karo(white) 7-8 cups puffed rice 3/4 cups peanuts Sesame seeds (opt)
Melt butter, sugar, and Karo until brown like caramel in color. Add puffed rice and peanuts. Pour into a 13x9 inch pan. Pat evenly and cut while still warm. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.

Noble Cousins!
Greetings from Solveig! How is this stuff moden? Let me count the ways! Basically, the stuff is pretty modern. Okashi may originally have been a kind of candied fruit. Early examples, include candied miniature eggplant bulbs. (I have had this.) I used to have a couple of books on Japanese candy. Alas, I do not know where they are or whether they have survived.

So this is basically a Japanese version of rice crispy bars?
