I've just been hanging around here since Otagiri-dono started this forum - and I got to see those kegutsu close up when we met at Estrella a few years ago. Wish he'd get active again.

Mitsumasa- I'm a little confused about the kozane. Do you have to put tomegawa (stopping leathers) to attach rows of plates? Or do they somehow lace together? Could you post some pictures of the back so we can see the attachment?

Tomegawa are always needed when you have a laced armour. Otherwise, the armour collapses in on itself when you take it off.

For a kebiki odoshi do, what holes do they go through? The diagram on your website looks like this... ...which makes sense for sugake odoshi, but the top row of holes is not actually open all the way through in a board made of kozane. Am I supposed to open special holes near the top of the front overlapping boards also? Am I supposed to sneak the tomegawa through and have them smashed flat just like the board-to-board lacing is?

Ah, I see your issue. Hm, okay.
The thing is, typically hon-kozane armours function differently than ita-mono armours. I should rephrase my statement to be standard with tôsei gusoku, not the earlier stuff, which *does* flop freely. Modern patterned armours are more problematic.
That being said, you have the option of not using tomegawa on honkozane armours. Sorry.

Your Excellency - the earlier armors which "flop freely" - does that present a problem in SCA combat? It seems that if the rows flopped around it would be much less protective. If you did use some kind of Tomegawa (an SCA equivalent) - what would you use?

I've used artificial sinew for tomegawa; that worked pretty well.

Yatta! Sode 1, front by tomlapille, on Flickr I finished a real sode tonight. This is nowhere near a completed project, but I now have all the techniques I need to finish the scale section. All that remains for the do is to lace a lot of boards, get kanagu mawari cut, and then attach those. Thanks everyone!
