I am making some hakama to fight in. I'm using the pattern from Effinghams site. Can I wear kiahan with them?

Absolutely! Simple enough to make, too. rhinohide.cx/yoriaku/kiahan.html The "pattern" link is gone, but there's a photo link that would be easy enough to work off of.

Or should I just make kobakama? Will kiahan work with kobakama as well?

I should think so, as long as they're long enough not to pull out of the top of the kiahan.
Or, if you really wanna go crazy and deal with pleating the legs into the bottom sections, tattsukebakama are an option.

Thanks Makiwara! Not sure which I will go with yet, but I'll let you know when I'm done. Dafyyd said he had a great time on ship this weekend. I wish I could have gone too!

I recommend doing full hakama for this purpose. The two benefits are that when you're not armored, you still look dressed, and that when you tuck a full hakama into kyahan (or suneate) you get an awesome silhouette that looks right.

Thanks Makiwara! Not sure which I will go with yet, but I'll let you know when I'm done. Ishida makes a good point as to wearability, and of course, you want to have plenty of room for any armor you're going to hide under it. I'm definitely gonna defer to the fighters on this one as they'll have more practical experience as to what works for 'em. You missed a good time. ;D Beautiful weather, friendly crew, sea chanteys, and man, can that ketch MOVE. I'm on their email list. I'll try to put the word out next spring when they're in town again. For those wondering, Dafydd and I met up to go on a tall ship sail on San Francisco Bay this weekend. www.historicalseaport.org/ has some info on our hosts. Saionji-hime reminded me of another good point. I'm hiding catcher's shin gear and leg armor made out of conveyor belt and ABS underneath my hakama, and no one is the wiser. If you have anything incongruous that you need to hide, hakama are great for it.

@ Ishida - do you wear kiahan over the hakama and shin guards? Does that work well?

RISE!</Vincent Price> But Saionji-Sensei, you don't recall if a friendly, stout young lad named Eamon was working that vessel, do you? He's one of my dearest college buddys, and has been working tall ships with that outfit for some time. In fact i beleive he is now Captain of the Hawain Chieftain. If you you ever do sail with them again, and encounter the illustrous young Cap'n Eamon, you tell Green Ben wishes him smooth sailing, and to treat you to his finest grog.

Ah, scrolling through your photos, I see you did encounter him, and caught him in fine form: It's a small world...
