While I'm here ... The third picture in Kimiko-sama's post, of the two ladies in red on a stage - anyone want to explain why they're dressed backwards?

Okay, I finally got that paper we wrote years ago on this up on the clan website. (Every time we looked at it it needed reformatting somehow...) This is about the Maple Viewers hat and is written by myself and two of my Clan Yamakaminari colleagues, Cecily and Rosalia for the Ice Dragon A&S competition a few years ago. www.yamakaminari.com/2012/02/26/the-maple-viewers-hat-2/ Elaine-hime, the link is 404-ing for me.

Now that I had a chance to see it at the correct URL, I think you came up with a plausible reconstruction, especially as both the Maple Viewer women appear to have some hair visible. Must remember to add it to my "links" page....
Nice work, ladies!

Maybe this doesn't belong here but I was wondering if this was a unique hat to a specific rank, religion, or occupation? My guess is that they are monks of some stripe. They appear to be wearing kesa (The orange and blue panels that are hanging from shoulder straps.).

Looks like a eboshi with a cloth twisted and tied into a square know then just tucked up into the cloth part
