Hi everyone. I'm brand new to the SCA and am strongly considering a Japanese persona. I was wondering if you guys could tell me where a good place to get started would be. I've found the Clan Yama website with the armor construction guide, but I really don't know much else about where to look. Like I said, I'm brand new to this, so any insight would be great. The thing I've had the hardest time tracking down is a helmet that would be fitting for such a persona. Sorry for rambling, I'm just a bit lost...
Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome. While I desperately need to update some of this, it contains a number of links to things that may be of use to you. wodefordhall.com/resources.htmIn particular, sengokudaimyo.com will be helpful as it has lots of information on armor and militaria for the SCA samurai. Have a look around and feel free to post your questions to the forum. We'll help if we can.

I was wondering if you guys could tell me where a good place to get started would be. In my opinion, you're here. This board gets more frequent traffic and fewer annoying discussions than any other Japanese historical persona forum I know about. There's the SCA-JML Yahoo mailing list if you prefer email, but it is totally dry for weeks at a time, sometimes. Just start looking through the archives here, and ask questions when you can't find something or figure something out. Sorry to say this, but you will have a hard time finding one. Very few people make Japanese kabuto for sale and they are expensive. Most people seem to buy a Western helm that is about the right shape and attach extra pieces to make it look more Japanese.

If you are on Facebook, there is an SCA Japanese group there.
As far as a japanese helmet is concerned, try searching here and the Armour Archive for "kabuto", and you will find discussions of sources, and occasionally see used ones for sale.
