Effingham's pattern mentions that there can be 3-4 no ita (middle lames): www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/graphics/patterns/mogamiPattern.PDFHow does one decide between 3 & 4 when the number of lames should be odd? I chose 5 (1 ichi, 3 no ita, 1 Hishinui), but after lacing they look too short and in reviewing my books of historical armors, most of them have 4 no ita, which would make 6... Is it just preference then? It looks that technically I"m not wrong, but to me the look doesn't "feel" right.

First off, they are just called "ita" (board). "No" in this case is a Japanese particle.
The number you make depends on the look you want. In some cases we see 5 boards total, and in some we see 6. 5 feels a bit more traditional to me, but I'd need to go looking through source material to see how good my got reaction is on that one. You do see longer sode, though, on some later armors.

Question for the crew: which looks better? 6 or 7 boards? My research has shown that 5-7 boards is accurate, but the "height" of the board is longer the less there are. Here are pics with 6 Attachments:

Here are pics with 7 I'm 6' with long arms, so I'm wondering if longer sode will look better on me and thus bite the bullet and cut, punch, and curve two more boards... Attachments:

Question for the crew: which looks better? 6 or 7 boards? Speaking purely about looks, I think the proportions on the 6-board sode are more attractive. Which version is more protective? Which version is more comfortable to wear and move in?

I agree that your sode would look better with 6 lames. Keeping in mind what you said about the height of the single lames being reduced when you add more of them, my conclusion is this: if you go for 6 lames, you can probably "get away" with using the height you already have. If you went for 7 lames, it would be more historically accurate to change the height - which, I'm guessing, you would not want to do Also, you say your armour is not for fighting, so I don't think 7 lames would be necessary.

Thanks guys, you're confirming my gut. I hadn't thought about reducing the lame size for 7 either. I've scaled everything else on the armour up slightly to accommodate my non-historical height, so I'm probably in the acceptable range for 6.

Complete. Thanks for the help everyone. I'll probably sew a cloth panel for the backs, but they're ready to be worn. Attachments:

Yes, I plan to make the Kabuto as well, but I'm tackling a mogami do now (see my other thread). Once that's done (and who knows how long that'll take...) the Kabuto is next, then a neck guard.
