In researching info for SD, I found some interesting info on the term "uchigi" or "uchiginu". The name applies to a hitoe shaped garment (whether for men or for women) made of cloth ("kinu") that has been beaten ("uchi") with a mallet. Image of a woman beating cloth - This looks to be post-period, but you can see what is going on. This brings me to Japanese fabric--many of the linens that we should be using are actually rather sheer, and appear similar to "lawn" fabrics, as was helpfully pointed out in my class this past weekend. A search on "lawn" did show quite the similarities. According the 「有職故実大辞典」, the cloth was beaten so that it would be stiff. We know the process is mentioned in the Tale of Genji as he references the kinuta, or fulling mallets. There is even a noh play called "Kinuta" This is something I'll need to try. I don't know if you can do it with modern linen fabric or not. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of a process? -Ii
