Greetings all,
A friend of mine has made his first step into a larger world and is interested in making Japanese lacing. He initially became involved in the woodworking aspect by making a loom but now would like to make the lace as well.
Any of you good people got references and/or examples of the various forms of lace? Round/Flat/Square/etc. and possibly the patters for them?
I know several of you have some amazing libraries and resources, so your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Randall

My good friend and retainer, Momochi is a decided expert on kumihimo, and is working on doing the odoshige for an entire museum quality harness for me that I am working on. He is a member of this forum, and I hope he chimes in, but it is worth mentioning that his work is of the highest caliber... Date

Major Simmons(sorry habit), Since Date has spoken highly of my work I will chime in. Making a loom for Kumihimo is the easy part. Doing the actual braiding takes many many many many, are see a pattern here, hours. For my own reference i use "Kuminimo" Japanese Silk Braiding Techniques, by Catherine Martin: ISBN# 0-937274-59-3. There are about 12 different braids in her book. She also shows how to set everything up to start braiding. Although I don't follow her directions to the letter, my braid does come out pretty well as you have heard. As far as braiding material, I use a cotton like floss/string made by J.P. Coats. I think it is used for lace work. You know for doilies(sp). I've even used silk in the past but it ened up being too expensive. If your friend needs any other advice I'm all ears. I'll even try to post some pics in the near future for all to see. Momochi
