Ok, I didn't know if this should go in the costuming section or not but...I have yet to see an obi being worn on an actual model. I have attempted to search on the internet and I usually just get a plain obi not being worn. How are they tied? Do they go under the hakama or over? Can I hide my ultra, secret ninja gear in them? ;D Anyone have pics of them wearing an obi? Ok, that is all my questions.
Yori, the always questioning one...

Ohayoo Gosaimasu, Shintaro-dono, In everything I have read, it indicates you wear the obi over the hakama. I don't have any pictures, but there are several sites on the Internet on how to tie obi. Now I'm sure these are modern tie methods, and I don't have any information on period practices. I'm sure someone here does, however. Masahide

Obi are worn UNDER the hakama! Technically, it's just a short sashi, nothing like a martial arts obi. All it does is hold the kosode closed while you put the hakama on. Tony

You got me there.... :-( I tought the Obi was the long and large belt worn over all.... are there many obi in a complete garnment ? What is the difference between obi and sash ?
A very interesting point, as I was not aware of those short obi that kept the kosode close. I tought you had to put the hakama first and then just fetch the kosode inside, always found this rather uneasy....

Obi are worn UNDER the hakama! Tony-sama, Soo Desu! I keep thinking about the Uwa-obi. Doesn't that go outside the Hakama, armor, etc, and is only under a jacket such as a Doubuku or a Jinbaori? Masahide

Makes me wonder if I am doing it correctly myself...
First I put on the kosode, and use a little cord to tie it closed. I then put on my full obi, (or if I am cheating, my leather one) either one does the main function of holding my swords. After this is on I remove the little cord. Usualy I wear a kataginu so this goes on next and the little cord comes back to hold it in place while I put on my hakama.
If I am wearing my armor properly (with shitagi insead of a t-shirt) I skip the Kataginu step, and put on the armor. My Uwa-obi is a very very old martial arts one that ties real nice, looks good and stays put. so in effect I am wearing two, one over the kosode/shitagi and one outside the armor.
Occasionally I will wear a thin cloth sporran type thing, it is a very narrow obi with a flapped pouch that is in the middle of it. I wear this pouch in front, makes a handy pocket. (just reach in through the door-knob catchers.)
Sound about right?
