Here is the pic of the Hitatare no kami I made using the same fabric as the suikan. In this pic it looks like it needs ironing more than it really does! ;-) Date

Very nice. How did you pass the lace at sleeves end ? Do they pass throught button holes like slots ?
A pic of you wearing it would also be nice.

Not sure how this one is done, but Ellen has an antique hitatare-kamishimo from Japan (probably for festivals, etc.). The cords there go in and out of un-hemmed holes--they are just slit carefully along the fabric. I've been trying this with my own--so far, it works remarkably well. I took one example and through it in the wash several times and it never came noticeably unravelled. I recommend people try it.
What I did, more precisely, was took an exacto knife and carefully cut holes staying as close along the threads as I could (I only wanted to cut vertical threads, not horizontal.

I did a similar thing, but I sewed a small rectangle and then put a drop of super glue in the rectangle. When it dried, I used the xacto to carefully cut the fabric. I have seen this done with clear lacquer for the edges of the holes on some period pieces, so superglue seemed a natural recreationist choice. No fray, and I can wash the bejeebers out of it.
There is another method where there are "belt-loops" sewn to the sleeve. I hate sewing beltloops on as much as I hate button holes, but it really "makes" the piece.

I'll have to remember that and try it next time. I have a suikan for stage that has the belt loops--I thought it was just something done for stage pieces, though.

Date I did the belt loop thing on my yoroi hitatare. Turned out okay, but I like the superglue idea!

I'm sorry for digging up an old topic but , Date Saburou Yukiie, that Hitatare no kami is exactly what I want to make. Are there any websites that would have a pattern for something like that?

I'm sorry for digging up an old topic but , Date Saburou Yukiie, that Hitatare no kami is exactly what I want to make. Are there any websites that would have a pattern for something like that? Oni-dono, The pattern I used was from the SCA-JML files section that our good Hiraizumi (Effingham) donated here at: f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/kBirQkfxIOzcjrNzNsuvfXuEtsNI-oo60yFuI1zAfukZS2U5n4Objd9lLu3QVTWxEAp1sKzr_xKmHfCJ3YPw/Garb%20files/Hitatare-types.PDFYou may have to cut and paste - there should be no spaces between the "r" and the "b" in garb on this link, but you get the idea... It is a simple pattern, and works very well. I have made several Hitatare using this pattern and have never been dissapointed. And no need to appologize - That is what these boards are for - Nothing is ever "closed" (at least I hope so!) Date

Ooohhhhh, boy clothes!!!!!!!! Date-dono, you're not helping! I have to finish weeding my closet this morning, then cut out a new heraldic surcote for Jehanne - the old one is just looking too tragic to go to KWCS and needs to be replaced. Do you have any preference for what you use for the cordage? No. Don't tell me. Too Many Projects!!!!!!!!! M.
