Konnichi wa,
I have a question about Hakama. In some of my reading I have heard mention of two, three, four and six pannel versions of Hakama. Each pannel being about 14-16" wide (basic cloth width).
Some sources seem to imply that the number of pannels is per leg, and some indicate it is for the whole garmet. Some sources even interchange the two systems, sometimes talking about three pannel hakama with three pannels on each leg, and then later talking about six pannel hakama, and indicate that means three pannels per leg.
What gives? Is there any one method that is correct, or do we just have to look at the source and see which system they are using, and try to figure out from context the sources that mix and match?
This really confuses me for the odd ones (how can you have three pannel hakama, unless you are talking about per leg), and the small ones (I know that 15" isn't a big enough circumferance for a leg and buttocks in a two pannel hakama with one per leg).
Any help would be appreicated.

My understanding is that it is 'panels per leg'. I could be wrong, though.
Also, I've seen many patterns that actually use a half panel for the panel at the crotch, so that could be what people are referring to, too (so each leg would actually have been 2.5 panels in width).
