Please get your nose off the floorboards, Cousin. You should be proud of your first outfit. You made clothing with your own two hands. In this day and age that's a big deal, which we of the SCA sometimes forget. When I looked at your photo, it seemed to me that you started your project with some idea of what "right" is supposed to look like, because even with all the mistakes you've inventoried, the silhouette looks OK. Point taken, Makiwara- hime. I will admit that I spent days studying patterns and pictures before ever sewing a stitch, so I owe much gratitude to Effingham-dono and Kass for making those available.

First Nihon GarbDescription of sources:I used a variety of of online and print sources, including Kimono by Lisa Dalby. Description of material:White linen for the fundoshi. White cotton broadcloth for the under kosode. Print cotton for the outer kosode. Trigger for the kataginu and hakama. Trigger for the eboshi. Print cotton for the tabi uppers, and cotton duck for the tabi soles. Tips and Tricks:I originally used a 15" wide panel for the under kosode, but it was woefully too small for my frame. To make the garments look appropriately sized, I generated a new panel width for all the garments. I took the measurement from the center of my neck at the back to my wrist, divided this by two, rounded up to the nearest inch, and added an inch for seams. This put all panels at 18" wide. This made cutting a little more challenging, as I had not anticipated such a wide panel in my fabric purchases. I think overall it went well, and I plan on writing an article called "Kosode for the Big and Tall" and using it for an A&S research paper. It was my first event TMT II, and let me tell ya, Raito-dono gave me some funny looks. No pics, thankfully, but the description, from innermost layer out: -kosode with fully attached sleeves sans eri and okumi -oversized, zoomba-style black denim hakama -black yukata with brown pin-point stars (in the middle of winter) -black silk tone-on-tone maru obi tied off with granny knot The hakama were so voluminous, and the obi so tight, that I ended up looking like a charred church bell on legs

Masahide-dono, Would you mind if I include you and this picture... to the section of my website I call the New Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere? There I set up pages and links to Asian Persona, so others can see what we Japanese, Mongols, Chinese, Korean etc people are wearing. Take a look for yourself if you like and see what i mean... www.kabutographics.com/projects/nipponjin001.htmlThis invitation, of course, goes out to all of us with Asian Persona... Please let me know if you like. Date

Furukusu-dono, nicely done. You look great. I see you have the same rumpled collar effect that I suffer from. One of these days I'm going to take apart a kosode collar and put in a layer of interfacing to see if that gives it the right crispness.
You remind me I should put some notes on patterning to scale in my kosode article.....

Furukusu-dono:
It was pleasure seeing you at Coronation, no matter how briefly. I hope we have more time at our next meeting.
Do you know if that enchanting Oriental beauty behind the thrones was Duchess Mina?

Actually, I do have pictures. But it's a bit hi-res and in the version I have online, I cut off at the calf, so you can't see the horrible badness[1]. The yellow top I still have- yeah, yeah, it's a linen look but it's actually pretty nice (well, after I trimmed the sleeves- the pattern I bought was pre-indepth research and was an Edo era kimono cut). The kosode goes about to my knees, I think, and was made out of a bedsheet in a few hours the night before. I was planning on using a white t-shirt but that just didn't work. The "hakama" was leftover from my first attempt at garb. I was thinking of doing China but then realized that I shouldn't have bought red to make a robe... And since I was new at sewing, I didn't even attempt to make this thing into a pair of pants, so yeah, I was wearing a skirt... And a pair of black mules for shoes...
Beats my first first attempt at Chinese garb. I couldn't find a very good picture at all so I was basically thinking wrap skirt... which I made out of a window curtain...
*blush*

Do you know if that enchanting Oriental beauty behind the thrones was Duchess Mina? Yes, I believe it was, but I never saw her. I'm having to rely on the report from my lady.... Furukusu

Do you know if that enchanting Oriental beauty behind the thrones was Duchess Mina? It was, as Ruri and I were involved in the dress up and makeup portion of her day, like 6 AM. But just for the record, it was indeed Mina.
