But *pout* I'm a *pout* fashion whore. Mundanely my closet is bigger than my room, seriously. It's in my nature to be anal about such things, even if no one else notices.

Fair enough, but you've got to start SOMEWHERE, no? Start with white kosode, hakama, ONE hitoe and an uchigi. I don't know how tall you are, but that's over twenty yards of fabric for someone my size. How much can your budget and sewing time stand right out of the gate? A white hitoe will go with a LOT of kasane. Blue-green is also a good hitoe color for summer. Then you just need to choose what color you want to top it with. Another option is faking layers. Make false collars, sleeve edges and hems and mount them on an inner layer. It's my understanding that this is a period method to cheat. ;-> I do hope you're going to share photos when you have assembled your finery. M. I

In fact, we just recently got a Jo-Ann's Superstore on the westside. YIPPEE-SKIPPY! ;D Well, I wouldn't consider Lakeside to be downtown,or are you referring to the Weaving Workshop on Johnson. ANd I sure like shopping at Gayfeather in preference to the chains. Too bad only Wal-mart seems to have trigger and duck (for various wear-intensive pieces that us fighter-people wear).

To Makiwara's last post: I have two kosode, scarlet nagabakama, and two hakama, one red, one navy/black. I was thinking of going with the kagi (?) layer for summer that the wonderful Kass McGann has posted on her Irome listings. To Kitadate-denke's last post: When living in Monona as I do, Lakeside IS downtown, and sadly, the Johnson shop has been defunct for a year or two now. Currently it's a hair salon. What a waste of space if you ask me. Although, what is this mention of chains and why would such be important?

Sorry to hear that. My comment on the chains refers to the chais of fabric stores like Hancock and Jo-Anns that seem to find more profit in crafts than textiles. Then again, sewing does seem to be losing popularity as a hobby and craft for the individual in the U.S. And being in Monona, Gayfeather isn't too far, just down by the east end of Willy St.
We have found some great stuff there (to keep this on topic).
You know that genre of ink painting depicting anthrpomophic animals acting out the foibles of man? AEsa now has a kosode made of stuff with cats in that mode (just ignore the one with the camera).
She also has some with definite Japanese motifs, if a little crowded for sengoku period. That sort of thing was popular with the quilting crowd for a year or so.
And she has an unlined ichikake made of some nice light blue stuff with a triped weave and dyed dragonflies. Probably yukata, but passably tsujigahana, if you don't notice the regularity of print (and the pattern is large, and repeats about every 2 feet, with space in between, so it looks very nice. She was wearing it last weekend).
I borrowed from her sister to go to court a black kosode with green and red maple leaves outlines in gold. Not quite right if you're really being pure, but at least the motifs were correct (I needed to attend court in something other than my shitagi)

Was that supposed to be "hagi?" If you figure out how to achieve that lavender-shot-with teal for the uchigi, that would be frickin' GORGEOUS.
BTW, I expect to be seeing "The Wonderful Kass McGann" Memorial Day weekend. We're both going under cover as camp followers at an English Civil War event in Maryland (which I'm combining with a visit to my family back east). I will be sure to give her greetings from all.

Please don't take this as bragging, but my grandfather has a16 th century swedish loom that is still in exceptional working order, and as soon as he's done with his current project, I'm getting next crack at it. And, well, take a wild guess as to what I'm thinking of weaving. Do you want a couple yards?

That depends upon how you define "a couple," m'dear. ;->
That would be incredibly cool, but I'm well aware what hand craftsmanship is worth!

Though I am tempted to go with the period standard of 18 inches (more accurate, easier to weave, but more than double the throws of weft). Financially, that would run me, what, an extra $10-$15. As for the labor, no cost for what concerns me; weaving is a kind of occupational therapy. Strike you a deal: you make me 2 or 3 of those beautiful fans you've been milling out, and you'll have fabric in return. Granted, if you were to take the basic materials of a fan, i.e. paper and ribs, and make a parasol instead, I would forever be in your debt. (I realize the latter is a slight stretch in effort and the imagination.)

Ooh, enough to actually wear! (Swoon!)
I have NO idea how to go about constructing a parasol, but I am certain we could do you some fans. And of course, shower you with wasabi potato chips.

I think I'll take you up on the showering with wasabi 'tater chips. Got a reply back from the company today, and I'd have cough up $30 minimum for a case. As for the fans, that would be most honorable. Now what's this about a certain prince capable of making parasols?? I now sit here wondering if I can learn my koto fast enough so as to play it at court for you. Though if my understanding is right, that would be a horrible thing to offer you, my Highness, since the agreement of Your Lady and you was to make this reign Norse/Scandinavian.

Thanks, guys. I have been pondering the question of kite flying (a masculine activity) and darnitall, I've come to the inevitable conclusion that I'm gonna have to make "boy clothes" at some point. Probably a suikan, maybe something along these lines..... I'm also going to have to make gloves. I've been eyeing the jidai matsuri photos on Jo's website. Argh! No More Projects!

Actually, Magamichi-dono, that was not the agreement. The agreement was that she could dress me.
