Thanks, guys. I have been pondering the question of kite flying (a masculine activity) and darnitall, I've come to the inevitable conclusion that I'm gonna have to make "boy clothes" at some point. Probably a suikan, maybe something along these lines..... I actually kind of like that outfit. Now, Makiwara-sweets, you have two options the way I see it. One you cut it down to the basics and just do kosode and navy or black hakama, with fundoshi just to butch it up a little (let me tell ya, what a party to wear fundoshi!). Or, secondly, just warm up to the idea of wearing a ho.

She's actually a shirabyoshi dancer and it's a very specific look, but I was thinking it was a spot to jump off from, seeing as I already have the hakama.
Drat you, boy, you're NOT HELPING. I made the mistake of watching "Kagemusha" yesterday and found myself eyeing up the kamishimo hitatare look because it would be an excuse to go play with the fabric paint again. But that would mean dressing like a bushi!
As for fundoshi, that's officially an over share.

Oh, but I thought by peer-pressuring you that I was helping you to jump off the cliff. C'mon, do it! Besides, fabric paints are always fun, especially the ones that have been sitting around the house for a few years like a fine aged wine. Thems go straight to one's head as I've learned.

Makiwara-hime,
Hey! I do it all the time! It is not that hard! And when I have to go to court, I dress like bushi with taste, though the Kuge probably laugh at me behind their fans! I even wear the Suikan when the situation warrants it (fortunately two weeks ago when the Crown gave me an award I was all Suikan'ed up) but I admit, I am most comfortable in the kitatare kamishimo.
Hey - Didn't Amemiko wear a hitatare kamishimo in OnMyojiII and she looked way too hot! Yum! Date

Heh. Peer pressure. Like THAT ever works. Have you SEEN me get in a boat with Otagiri-dono? Yet? ;->
And don't think I haven't noticed that Our Esteemed Moderator is dropping subtle hints by posting Hokusai pinup girls.

Of course you do, Date-dono. You ARE a bushi. (You should hear my mother. "Kannon preserve us, girl, what are you thinking? He's not just a bushi, he's a bushi from Mutsu!!!!")
Stop channeling Paris Hilton, it's disturbing. I haven't seen "O II" yet.
Mother is right! You ARE a bad influence.
On the other hand I SO overestimated how much gold paint I was going to need for the "Shoot Me" kosode.....

....the "Shoot Me" kosode....
I realize where that name would come from, but what a terrible thing to call such a wonderful piece! Though a bit off topic, care to fill me in as to why Makiwara-dono has such a terrible aversion to Otigiri when it comes to boats? I'm so confused!

As to Otagiri-dono, and his boats... hey...what ever floats them...especially if it is the Hokusai Pin-up Girls... You should see the Hiroshige Calendar Girls of Kyoto!
Oh yea...thats right, I am...I have to put away my art collection of woodblock prints and get out in the world more...
Oh, and Paris Hilton? NOT!!!

Go to the "Heiho" section and read the "Culture of Deeds" thread to see how this got started. M.

Makiwara-gimi, I think a life vest would perfectly compliment your shirabyoshi. Besides, I'm quite sure hunter orange is a period color. Nagamochi

Ooh, enough to actually wear! (Swoon!) I have NO idea how to go about constructing a parasol, but I am certain we could do you some fans. And of course, shower you with wasabi potato chips. M. a local asian food store has some parasols on the cheap... (paper and thin stirps ofg wood (presumably bamboo) I rather have in mind to get one and dismantle it tomarrow. being fairly new to my research, I can't say I have seen much artwork of straight males carrying them, BUT being origionaly froim the midwest, I find I have this alergy to scorchingly hot sunlight so common in the south.

Look for street scenes in genre paintings. I KNOW I've seen male figures in Edo period woodblocks carrying them. I googled images under "Japanese Umbrella" and found this, for example: Or you could always wear a hat. ;->

Back onto the topic some....
I'm suddenly very confused. I just finished watching a good chunk of Kagemusha and feel ripped off with a karaginu mo. On the one hand a karaginu mo is wonderful and sumptuous, but the sheer intracacy of pattern on the MENS' clothing in this movie far surpasses, in my mind anyway, the beauty of the former. Though before I wrack my brain as to what to do, I should ask a few things first: being a Kurosawa film I don't feel it's too off base, but honestly, how accurate and how much research was done, particularly for the clothes? Secondly, seeing as I haven't looked for patterned fabrics in ages, what patterns would be appropriate? Third, for portraying the 1500's, DEAR KANNON, WHERE DO I BEGIN!?
Confused and mildly panicked, Nagamochi

Everyone knows they're just effete courtiers without real power. Whereas I am more comfortable in kataginu kamishimo. (Is it really that obvious that I'm really late period from my comments?)
