I'm tired of string burns and I would like to make some gloves for future kite crashing adventures. While I suppose I could wear modern gloves, or even go with a modern Western glove pattern, I kept thinking about the gloves that I saw in several of Jo's Jidai Matsuri photos. They appear to be fabric or leather, usually in a dark color (blue, though I did see a dark maroon and even a bottle green) with white patterning. This was not helped by the fact that I recently found a blue calico remnant with white dots that are a pretty good fake of shibori..... Googling on yugake gets a lot of hits on kyudo gear, which doesn't help much, as those only protect certain parts of the hand. The drawings on Tanki Yoriaku indicate that yugake can be fairly long, open down the inner arm and tie shut, probably like kyudo yugake, by winding the tie around the wrist and tucking in the loose end. I found a falconry site, of all things, www.jfa.gr.jp/en/falconers/ which seems to indicate a seam at the base of the fingers. Any clues anyone can provide would be most helpful. M.
