From the infos I could find on the net (sca-jml and others) I made my first pair of waraji last week-end. I used Hem jewelry cord (Elements #1445 Monster (170lb) natural 64 YDS) that I found at Wall Mart.
Well, I did not tought it was going to be such a fun and easy project to do. Only took a few hours. Of course these are my first and I never seen any first hand so their is surely many mistakes and they are not work of art, but hey! they work and do not look that bad :-) it will be a good complement for the outside demo we will have in july. Now I only need to make some tabi to go with it ...

Hello Otagiri,
This was my main source of info, I printed out everything there :-) And of course I will start with your tabi pattern. Did you made some yet ? Any pics ? Those I've seen on the net (modern) have a flat to close in the back over the heel. Those shown on your site (from Daimyou54 Tabi seem to be open in front and close with ties.... I'm not sure what type I will make. Any reference from period ?

The most common pre-tokugawa tabi have the opening in the front. I've learned not to say 'never,' but the back-opening tabi are more common in recent centuries. I do have several sets of tabi, but if I don't get some pics tonight, it will be a couple of weeks before I can get some. (On the road again ...)

Well if you can get those pictures it would be great :-) Upper/under/side wiew, close up on front opening, wearing it.... well you see, anything that can help visualize in 3d ... But if you can't, well I will have to experiment all by myself ;-) Have you made some with different color for sole and upper part ? What material did you used, I was thinking of some cotton ...
Michimasa P.S. only 10 hours left on the Yumi from US, are you still bidding on this one ?
P.P.S. I searched the WEB for howto on tabi, and yours is the only one I found so far (except for those commercial patterns that are most likely modern)

Cool!
Let us know how they wear. I'm always wondering how different materials will hold up. For instance, I like raffia for the look, but I'm not sure it holds up as long as I'd like it to. Then again, these aren't long term shoes.
Hmmm... I need to work on that pair of leather Japanese shoes I saw. After I get waraji done for pennsic and others, though.
