Not sure if this goes under clothing... I'm trying to find pictures of a particular hairstyle. I found it a long time ago but my Google skills seem to have failed me. I think it was called the paintbrush. A section of hair came forward and was splayed out like a fan brush... Any help in this would be greatfull... Even just the Japanese word for it would help.

Look under the Media reviews section on the first page. There is a post called Manga: Onmyoji and the third link of the first post is a picture where the hair comes out like a fan on either side of the face. Or here is a link to a description of the fan-like topknot. www.samurai-archives.com/clothing.html (hair section is at the bottom)

That would be it, but so far no pictures. Chasengami It says that the "Christian Samurai" is wearing one, but it looks like a pony tail to me... Just trying to plan properly... I want to still fit in during my daily life but I want to try for an obviously Japanese hair style. Fortunatly I'm in IT so we have people with blue hair and I won't stand out without really pushing it. I currently have a section in the middle back of my hair that I plan on growing out, but it's starting to look like the topknot is made from the top of the head... *goes back to google...*

I have had a hard time finding online resources for period hairstyles. All I can seem to come up with is geisha hair, which is not what I am looking for. *trying desperately to grow her hair to knee length* It's a constant search so I will let you know if I come across anything of use for you.

I think I found something... It look like a tree on top of the guys head, but it kind of matches the description of a paint brush. I just thought it was much smaller, like a single lock in size. I don't envy you trying to get knee length hair, but I'd love to see it. My hair turns into ringlets when it gets long so I'm really leary of growing it, that's why I was hoping for just a single lock, looks like I need to look into straigteners...

Go to www.iz2.or.jp/english/fukusyoku/kosode/index.htm Click on Edo Period and go to the bottom of the list at the right of the screen, if this link doesn't get you there. There's a page of women's historical hairstyles. Mine is almost to my waist these days. ;-> M.

can sit on it length here too.
and I seem to recall reading laments of some women of the court on the fact thier hair asn't as long as some beauty or other, or that it wasn't as glossy black and fine.
at least in using falls for more length we are period. (wry smile) but good grief finding good ones is a pain.

Noble Cousins!
Greetings from Solveig! Unless you are interested in very early Japan, japanese women have it really easy as the hair of adult women is ideally pretty much long, straight, parted in the middle, and tied in the back.
Masculine hair styles are a bit more complicated, but unless you want to shave your forehead, you can pretty much go with what I just described for women except move the pony tail higher on the head.

Cool, thanks! Mine is at my butt. It just doesn't want to grow any longer. Mine used to be at my butt. Then I started going bald, and now it isn't nearly as long.

I had previously been trying to wear my hair up in a cho-mage, (Chasen-gumi) but having wine western hair, it was difficult to pull tight enough even with a tight wrapping to get the nice "stick" below the "poof"
I did not like the latter practice, tied, oiled and then flipped over to rest on the shaved pate. (not to mention it looks stupid if you do not have a shaved pate)
A couple of weeks ago I chopped it short, though I regretted it when I took pictures and at the event this past weekend. Now I have to wear an eboshi.
:sigh: it will grow back.

How much of the hair was oiled?
If I were to grow my hair out like that, it would be easy to get a nice firm "stick" since I ended up with Filipino hair (I'm Filipino/Euro-mutt), and it's as straight and coarse as Japanese hair is. But, i've got a sensitive scalp so oil would annoy me to no end. Of course, I hate long hair so I'd never ever grow it more than a few inches long anyway.
But right now my hair is buzzed short all over.

How much of the hair was oiled? I am not sure, I would guess all of it by the sheen in old photos. Either that or they had good conditioners back then I think I read somewhere (I do not remember the source and if it was good or not) that choji-oil was used at times. Keep in mind choji-oil like used for the care of swords is not pure clover-oil extract, it is fine mineral oil (not like baby oil, much less thick, think lamp oil) with a drop of clove oil extract. (About 1 drop per 2-4 cups) Additionally, clover oil extract was added to mineral oil by the Japanese oil merchants so they and thier customers would not confuse mineral oil with cooking oils. Mineral oil is an outstanding laxitive, and abura-age should never act like x-lax! I would not be suprised to find out if other extracts were added to the hair oil mixes to achive other pleasant scents, either that or adding a pinch of powdered incense. I'd be interested in learning more myself if this shakes a thought loose from anyone. -Takeda

Big Sis, I was at the craft store the other day and in my wanderings found a raffia made into 2 inch wide strips. One would have to bleach them if white was desired, but they seemed durable enough for hair ties. Or you could always cheat and go with wired ribbon; though I have a feeling that would get prickly.
