Hair?

How much of the hair was oiled? I am not sure, I would guess all of it by the sheen in old photos. Either that or they had good conditioners back then I think I read somewhere (I do not remember the source and if it was good or not) that choji-oil was used at times. Keep in mind choji-oil like used for the care of swords is not pure clover-oil extract, it is fine mineral oil (not like baby oil, much less thick, think lamp oil) with a drop of clove oil extract. (About 1 drop per 2-4 cups) Hmm... clover oil or clove oil? I didn't know clover plants made enough seed to get oil! Either way, all of that oil would wreak havoc with my scalp... I can only imagine how itchy and irritated it might get. Then again, clove oil contains an anasthetic so it may kill the itch!

I've actually found white paper ribbon for gift wrapping, however, it tends to be a bit crinkly.
IIRC, camellia oil was used for hair dressing by women, at least.
Judging by the dizzying array of goop you can find in the haircare aisle, styling gel might work.

If you don't want to deal with actual oil (or even pomade), there's plenty of products (as Makiwara says). If hold is all you need, the best for coarse hair is American Crew, and it smells nice, plus it's easy to wash out. However, if you want super hold, and high shine (replicating the gloss of oil) there's a product line called "ICE", which has products with high shine, like their definer (which is said to have 200% the shine of natural hair). There's also "Spiker" which they call a "hair glue" and contains resin and _vinyl_. You need a special product called "eraser" to get it out though (it's almost waterproof). The colored "Spiker" product also comes in "Tar black" so if you want jet black hair... there you go .
