Ordinary wearing? I have a psuedo-pattern for tabi which open in the front. The front opening was common pre-Edo. rhinohide.cx/tousando/img/tabi.jpgIf you want the standard back-opening type, I would just buy a pair and cut them apart at the seams for a pattern. (Be careful if you buy off the internet that you are buying stiff tabi with a back opening and not just nylon stretch tabi).

Show me yours and I'll show you mine. I've made some from cotton/poly blends and some from leather. What is the authentic material for pre-1600 tabi?

Shameless! I bet you say that to all the - oh, wait, you're talking about tabi. Never mind. (Slink, slink, slink).
And I know you posted pics of them somewhere.....
Mine are under another Wafuku thread titled "Tabi." They're linen - a reasonable substitute for hemp, which is stupidly expensive because some people insist on trying to smoke it.

DIDNT THE SAMURAI HUNT DOGS? DO YOU THINK THEY MIGHT HAVE USED THE LEFT OVER PELTS FOR TABI. WHEN I WAS IN AFRICA A LOCAL TRIBE USED DOGS TO HUNT, PROTECT, AND COMPANIONSHIP. ONE OF THE TRIBE MEMBERS DOGS DIED AND THEY USED THE PELT FOR FOOT PROTECTION. THIS IS A VERY TUFF PELT. IN NIPPON THEY HUNTED DOGS FOR SPORT. NO YU DO NOY WANT TO SEE MINE!!!! WELL MAYBE IF WE WERE IN A SCHOOL YARD?

DIDNT THE SAMURAI HUNT DOGS? DO YOU THINK THEY MIGHT HAVE USED THE LEFT OVER PELTS FOR TABI. That's right. Hmmm.... Didn't they eat fish too? Maybe they used fish skin? (I'm teasing you. From what little I know, they used dog and deer hide in pretty much the same way. If they used deer skin for tabi; it's probable that they used dog skin as well. I can get one of those from Tandy.)

And since we are on the subject, here is what the Tanki Yoriaku (~1717) has to say: There are two chief kinds of socks, kawa-tabi, tanned skin socks, and momen-tabi, or cotton coth socks. There are also momi-tabi (red silk socks) which are very soft, but they are only used by very effeminate persons. The kawa-tabi, of tanned skin, are often printed in fancy patterns. These are not the best for mounted men. Quilted cotton tabi are generally used, and tabi without soles are recommended for infantry soldiers (ashigaru). These are worn like ordinary tabi, but you must put on the left one first, and all footwear, such as tabi, kiahan, and waraji, must be put on when the wearer is seated.rhinohide.cx/tousando/yoriaku/

Noble Cousin! Greetings from Solveig! nor typical SCA junk nor authentic reproduction... I just need tabi... If you just need modern tabi, why not shop at Nichibei Buson. That is where the Noh workshop I attended recommended buying the things.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the 'Folkwear' Japanese patterns includes a tabi pattern.
Deerskin, Eff? How in the world did they keep it from stretching? (This coming from someone who works with leather commercially, mind you...)
If you use brain-tanned deerskin it's going to stretch like hell unless you use a *very* thick hide. And if you use a thick hide, then stitching the toe would be both a nightmare and the would be very uncomfortable to wear.
Was the hide bleached white? Were colors used? What about patterns (Embossing? Block printing)? Were other hides used as well? Were they lined?
(Can you tell I'm interested in making some but haven't done any reseach at all? ;D)
