Clamps?

I'm looking for a source of 'third hands'- the little clover clamps used to hold kimono so you can do long lines of stitching by hand.
I can find them easily enough on the BDSM sites where they're being sold as nipple clamps, but I don't want to shell out $20+ for a pair. (And besides, I have enough 18" long pieces of chain to suit me.)
Does anyone know where I can get them at a reasonable price?

One word. Clothespins. They're handy for all kinds of things when you just need a light clamp.

I've tried clothespins, but they just don't hold well enough. Clover clamps grip harder the more you pull. I suppose I could just make something...

Probably cause less of a disturbance than the Shopping Uruk Hai. (Looooooooong story and a bad filk to go with it.) I'd never seen these clamps before. Nifty. Usually I just drop Boucher's "20,000 Years of Fashion" on top of anything I don't want to shift. It's like an anvil, only with pictures..... Saionji

I'd never seen these clamps before. If Date-dono or Saiaiko-dono ask you to help teach a class but won't tell you the subject matter ... don't.

When next you shop at *insert department store name here*, keep the plastic pant hangers that come with your trousers. Cut the plastic clamp ends of the hangers, and they will form excellent clamps for quick use stuff. They don't look very good, and you might have to tape or tie them in place... but they are pretty functional. That little metal piece locks them in place, and they'll hold a good chunk of fabric together... or hold a bag of potato chips closed! Credit for this tidbit is due to Mirnavela Arhiel - the woman crazy enough to live with me.

Yes, classes can be risky... Just ask Date-dono about how he dropped me.

Our class went well, but we were attempting to achieve a level of realism here-to-fore unseen. I dropped Saiaiko-hime like a rock...at her request. A little properly and judiciously applied aikido style arm lock and takedown... She went down like an LA looter at a brown out...and I hog-tied her fast...and only just slightly brutally. How could I not - she called me an effete'kuge! Even in the presence of armed samurai guards!
Just for the record, and many people can corroberate this - our class was not built on more modern pleasures, but period techniques. There was only un-knotted half-bu dia. rope.
Of course, now that I think of it, in the scenario we were playing, as a member of the floating world, she deserved knots...either that, or a summary beheading...
I so prefer the combat field to wrangling civilians...

Believe it or not, I want the clamps so I can make Japanese sewing boxes. I haven't even started the research, and I don't have a clue as to whether or not they're period, but they look like a wonderful thing to take to Pennsic. (As usual, I'm diving into this face-first with my eyes closed...)

How could I not - she called me an effete'kuge! Even in the presence of armed samurai guards! Man, she was definiately trying to goad you! If the situation was reversed you'd be lucky if Saiaiko didn't parade you around the block for such an insult. -Takeda
