VERY cool! No clue how old they are, but I've been wanting one for some time - which was how I ended up with the kiri tansu.

I know that...and there was no way she could have turned the situation. Tomodachi, I owned the situation!.
Actually, this was just a scenario...The class was Saiaiko-hime's...and I was playing a role. It would be fun to be all macho and crap...but in reality we were attempting to display period techniques. We had several helpers, and there was a lot of research into this project...but, to continue, we should probably move the hojojutsu theme to another thread...I do not want to take away from the third hand subject. being a person who sews, as Ogami-sensei does, I know that third hands are terribly usefull...if not hard to find. There is nothing wrong with proper kuge, my dear, as I am sure you know. As one who generally accompanies his majesty Go Daigo Tenno, I am quite used to the court. Those that truely serve are welcome in my presence.
Sniveling, effete' kuge...social climbers who need to cling to the hems of a beautiful court lady's garments, such as the hems that grace your clothing, those that need to be part of the court to feel needed...or those of a simpering court minister are, at best, deserving of the bad karma they generate.

(Pardon me while I stifle a giggle.)
Oh! Tatami! Why didn't you SAY so, tomodachi? Irritating, unsubtle creatures with grasping hands, too much incense in their robes and no poetry in their souls.
One can only drop that sort of person like a rock - with a quizzically raised eyebrow, the significant snap of one's fan, perhaps even a properly and judiciously applied poem - then simply toe such a pebble out of one's path and move gracefully onward.

Believe it or not, I want the clamps so I can make Japanese sewing boxes. I haven't even started the research, and I don't have a clue as to whether or not they're period, but they look like a wonderful thing to take to Pennsic. (As usual, I'm diving into this face-first with my eyes closed...) To the most honorable Ogami-dono, As my book "Make Your Own Japanese Clothes", by John Marshall, states: "Third hand" clamps, otherwise known as kake-hari in Japanese, are called in earlier times by the name of Elizibethan nightingale, with good reason. So if memory serves me right, I think that would make them period. But what would I know, I'm just another effete kuge with no sense of Engrish history. Hope this helps, Nagamochi

I would be interested in ordering a couple... They come in handy in tight spots (especially now that I am making kimono for my 17 year old retainer.) The sewing boxes... are they Edo period or am I just seeing reproductions modeled after earlier originals? (Not that it really matters to me, if it's outstanding I don't care what period it comes from.) For that matter, are these clamps modern mechanical inventions, or the evolutionary result of something used prior? I cannot find such information in my Google searches. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- You're right, this should be in another thread... but I will say no more than this: "and there was no way she could have turned the situation. Tomodachi, I owned the situation!."Turned? No. Of course not, it would have been unseemly, besides undermining to the demonstration. It is good to hear, bushi boast in chauvin jest. He must sleep sometime.
