Ok, so I've decided to go full tilt boogie on the karaginu mo deal. Have all the layers from fundoshi to uwagi. I'm working on the kouchigi/kouchiki, which is a striped and diamond woven pattern silk, or at the very least silk-like, in red and doing a hexagonal mon on it comprised of three halves of a cherry blossom. My question and confusion concerns the next layer out. I'm not sure of the exact name, but I feel fairly certain that said layer is referred to in Genji Monogatari as "a robe from far Cathay." The one detailed pic I've seen shows it to be something of an odd shaped vest, one might even call it a set of glorified sleeves. I'm curious as to the exact cut for starters (don't want to be making a tank top when I should be making an evening dress). Next what fabric should this be made of, more silk, a brocade, or other? Lastly and more importantly, would the color of the layer be season and situation specific like irome no kasane, or can I just throw that discretion somewhat to the wind like a kouchigi?
Also, for the kouchigi, in the pics I've seen, it seems like it's deliberately cut several inches shy in hem and sleeve. Is that true, or are my eyes just playing tricks on me? Either way, I'll post pics when it's done with my pine-layer karaginu.

That must be one of the older Genji translations! ;D Sounds to me like that would be the karaginu ("Chinese Jacket"). This thing: I've never made one, but it's two sleeve panels, two body panels and an eri and it would be the same dimensions you'd use for your other layers. The body panels are a few inches longer than the sleeves in the front and should at least be waist length in the back because it goes under your mo. I've never NOT seen one with the big brocade roundels. This is your top layer, worn on the most formal occasions, not a jeans jacket. So either win the lotto or find a silk jacquard and join the Imperial Army Stencil Corps. This is the part I'm not really certain of. I see red alot. I've seen purples. (And of course, those are Forbidden Colors, so you'd better prove your worth to His Majesty!) There's a pale green on in the Sugino Costume Museum. That salmon pink I've only seen the one time. Perhaps someone else here can shed some light? Sleeves are the same - gravity will do the job. Mine is about eight inches shorter than the hitoe beneath it. You want to show off the layers under it. You'd better! S.

"You'd better," huh? Why do I have this sudden urge to duck under a properly wielded sensu?

Inoue-hime, hamana-huh-what?
Tempting you? How? Didn't know I had made mention of this prior above and beyond to a couple of on-the-fly comments in two earlier posts. Eh, at least I get to create some anticipation for a change.

Yep! Created anticipation, and the questions you posted to the list were very helpful. Which makes even more anticipation as two people can take the same information and do two completely different things with it.
Afraid I'm not Alijazi.

So the outfit isn't complete- no karaginu, kouchigi, or mo, but I have pics! Hopefully the links will work. www.myspace.com/38514972Two pics there. One with European-persona-ultra-shocking shadow smile! You can see the layers, but like a namban, I didn't think to take pics of the nagabakama behind me as well. Like when Inoue-hime shows up in my barony for Coronation ::wink, wink, nudge, nudge::

Oh, and if I may add, I was amazed at how many random, complete strangers came up to me and asked, "Can I take your picture!?" like some adoring fan. lol

Isn't stopping traffic fun? Jehanne gets asked that a lot with the monkey and the hurdy gurdy. She even had a couple of cub scouts ask for her autograph at a demo, as if she was one of the fighters. Now, when I'm out and about as Saionji, people stop and stare, but I think they're too intimidated to ask to make Saionji's portrait. I can't imagine why..... S>

Like when Inoue-hime shows up in my barony for Coronation ::wink, wink, nudge, nudge::Never fear! Never fear! Inoue is here! Or will be there. However it works out language wise. I'm still recovering from birthday festivities yesterday. I will make certain to take pictures of nagabakama and mo! Sharing is good! Don't feel bad about forgetting to have a few pictures taken. There's always another event. I didn't feel bad about forgetting to bring towels to wrap around my waist for the dance performance last Saturday. I found a new use for my scarf instead. Good thing two layers of silk kimono and obi are opaque enough so the black scarf didn't show through.

Oh, is that why you're so blurry? ? It looks like a perfectly nice tablet woven or inkled belt. Wear it with an early period European tunic and it would be fine.... S.
