it could be jasmine, although the image you posted is probably Chilean jasmine. Here's the flowers from the pink jasmine in my garden: I notice the leaves look a bit like Jasmine too, but it's really hard to tell without getting a good closeup of that image.

Hmmm, you know, if you do a sketch on graph paper and run it through a laminator, it makes a damn fine stencil....

Did you sketch the spray of flowers and lozenges from Tosenin's kosode?
For my stencil of the chigiri design, I think I'm going to use a clear plastic (perhaps overhead projector sheets) to get the alignment right, and mark alignment points to avoid a haphazard pattern.

Just the lozenges so far. My plan of attack: Lozenges first in gold. As a unit of five, it's the biggest element and I want to be able to give them plenty of room lay-out wise. Don't hate me, I do it mostly by eye. Flowers next in white. (Why, yes, I am delaying on this as I decide what sort of white flowers I'm going to put on there...) Leaves next in dark green. Each color gets stencilled all at once.

I like that layout for the lozenges. It looks like a set of them scattered, but kept in order.
The flowers should be petty easy to copy, but I also notice thee are leaves in that design, are you going to create a stencil for those, or attempt hand painting?

I like that layout for the lozenges. It looks like a set of them scattered, but kept in order. Balanced without being symmetrical was what I was going for. I should be able to free-hand those. In fact, I'm debating whether I should attempt free-hand work with the flowers. There are pros and cons either way. I'll probably have to noodle around on some scrap fabric and see if I like the results.

Well, you did a good job at getting the assymetrical balance right, and you kept the general lozenge shape in the grouping too.
The flowers should be pretty easy with a little practice. I think it's a lot of repetitive work, but it makes it even more "hand made".
I on the other hand have blue hands from dying silk just now (i'ts going through a rinse, next is the synthrapol wash).

You're not turning into a Smurf, are you, Madyaas? What type of blue are you working with?

You're not turning into a Smurf, are you, Madyaas? What type of blue are you working with? Dharma Trading's "Azure". It makes my unmanicured hands look even worse . You can read the results over in my Garb N' Dyejobs thread (as I don't want to clog Makiwara's thread with my babble).

Three detail stencils cut, one to go - I'm taking a break because my index finger is feeling the stress of two hours worth of intricate cutting! The higaki (braided fence, top right) and hemp leaves (top left) were murderous - all the white is cut out to leave the lines, so when stencilled there will be a lot of gold. The kanze mizu (flowing water, bottom right) and rai (lightning, bottom left, still needs cutting) are being cut on the dark lines so they will appear mostly brown with gold highlights. I plan on stencilling the large lozenge design first, then using these to fill in each lozenge. The designs come from a fold-out in Seiroku Noma's Japanese Costume and Textile Arts, from the Heibonsha Survey of Japanese Art. This is a great little book - lots of photos, including 43 color plates, and a good deal of it is devoted to textiles for our period. I enlarged them on a photocopier, cut them out and put them in a plastic sleeve to be laminated. If you don't have access to one at work, you may be able to get this done at Kinko's or Office Max or something.

Wow, that's meticulous work there. It makes the pattern I'm putting on the hakama (I've decided to go with a modified version of the Mariposa Lily mon I created) look like child's play. I am very interested to see how this all comes out for you.

So far the body and okumi have the lozenge base with one completely gold lozenge done and I've started stenciling the "hemp leaf" overlay, which I am extremely pleased with!

You will get close-ups when I get more done - I had to knock off after that because it's been a lot of crouching over that table. The ceiling is dormered up here....

I'd offer to come rub the knots out of your shoulders, but I can only send you Zen hugs from here. I hope you're going to send us pictures of you wearing that creation. You're good.
