As reported yesterday, the stenciling in gold is done. I may or may not work on a drawing/stencil for the flowers tonight - it's been a long day for me at work and right now I could very happily murder a bag of wasabi potato chips and a beer and watch Adam and Jamie blow things up. Re the time zone thing, as you get older, you may find that your sleep cycles can be a bit special.

After some halfhearted piddling with a stencil blank and X-acto knife I asked myself what I was so damn afraid of? So, the flowers are going on free-hand.

Wow, it's really beginning to look like Tosenin's Kosode. The white flowers really make the fabric.

Let us pause for a moment of silence as I mourn the loss of a most noble and valiant paint brush. You see, the way I'm getting such neat flower petals is by flattening the brush against the fabric so that the bristles splay out into an almost perfect triangle, then dragging slightly before lifting the brush again. Unfortunately, by the time I knocked off this evening, there was no bounce-back left in the bristles and they were getting increasingly difficult to manage. Thus it is with heavy heart I make pilgrimage to Michael's on my lunch hour tomorrow to search for a new recruit.

At least the brush did not die a cruel fate painting happy little trees. An honorable death for any paintbrush, to die painting flowers .

As I look at the work I've done so far and compare it to the portrait, I didn't put anywhere near as many white flowers on my kosode as the original artist did. Part of me is angsting over it, part of me is rationalizing that I'm faking brocade, surihaku or embroidery (or a combination of all three) based on a very small reproduction of a portrait in a book. Aesthetically I can't decide whether I want to go back and add more flowers. I like what I did, but the portrait kosode is just so luxe.
I just painted a couple of leaves on in the green and now I'm waiting to see how they dry. This paint is a lot thinner and wetter than the others I've used and is actually bleeding through the back of the fabric a little. If the green dries very dark, I may have to mix some white and yellow into it. I'm also thinking that some subtle highlights in gold on the leaves might be a nice touch....

Sometimes it's hard not to step over that fine line between just right and too much. That might be a very nice subtle touch and something the most observant would pick up on. It might also add that "luxeness" you're looking for.

I mixed a LOT of white into the green and it's still fairly dark, but it really looks GOOD right now. Let's see how THAT dries....

I'll try to get some up Monday - I have to go down to Santa Cruz tomorrow to meet my Dad and don't know what time I'm getting back.
I think getting out of the garret and working on the leaves at an event today really helped me feel better about the current ratio of flowers to negative space, not the least of which was because people kept coming over to see what I was working on and making Wow noises.

It's a good thing you didn't go overboard with the flowers then. I'm sure the leaves have taken a lot of the negative space that you might otherwise have used to fill with flowers.
