Ahh, arigato, Makiwara-dono.
I was operating from the perspective of a favor being a gift given as a sign of respect, not as part of a mutual understanding that a warrior would fight for the giver's honor.
Gifts! A wonderful way to say "We should be friends!"

I can't remember for sure (and can't seem to get to his site from here at work), but doesn't Date-dono wear a sode jirushi?

As you said, you're still learning about SCA culture, in which the idea of a favor holds a certain context. Last Estrella, the King and Queen of the East ended up camping with our group of Westerners and emigres from the East. Our last day together was kind of like Christmas as everyone in our camp started exchanging tokens. I'm still trying to figure out when I'm ever going to wear the Thor's hammer HRM Thorson gave me. Anyway, HRM Svava pulls out a bunch of those little cloth favors (the sort I described in an earlier post on this thread) and said, "I don't know, can I even give these to you?" It was mutually agreed that these favors weren't REALLY favors but personal gifts and therefore OK. I don't wear it, but it's displayed in a place of honor in my home.
Yes in very deed.

Honored Lady,
Yes he does. It serves him well, in many ways. Not that it is needed to make his armor "distinctive" from the munition grade gusuku so often seen, but also a "wear indicator" for other portions of his gear!

As a bookmark? THAT's why I remembered it - because the first time I saw it, I didn't know what it was. ;->
