Noble Cousin! Greetings from Solveig! Ahh! That's it! I was only using the biwa as a similar instrument (both played similar to a guitar), the Shamisen was the one I was looking for. Thanks! Your talk about the box-like body made me think of a shamisen, but the instrument in the picture is obviously not one. The shamisen figures prominently in a variety of Edo period forms. Its body is somewhat banjo-like and has cat skin sides. I don't know about it being around much before 1600, if that early. I am not near my library at the moment and can not look it up. Solveig-hime, you couldn't have known this but my European alter-ego, Jehanne de Wodeford is a total fanatic about pre-1600 music and performance within SCA contexts. She sings in Middle English. For fun. The ads for both programs use words like "fitness," "style" and "spirit." Vague, probably totally ahistorical, and you can see who they're gearing it to with buzzwords like those. I'm going to try to audit a class at Emeryville this week and see what it's like. (It's possible I may be way ahead of most beginners they get because I already know how to play in an ensemble, listen to the rest of the group, follow a leader, all that good stuff.) If it seems like a good enough reason to part with allowance money and get out of the house a night or two a week, I may do it. Yep. I just got invited to a message board called "Gaijin Geisha" today. Nuff said. Saionji
