Thou suckest. But in that good way. Erm, that *other* good way.
Seriously -- really splendid!

Thou suckest. But in that good way. Erm, that *other* good way. Shouldn't a woman of accomplishments, well, you know? In all seriousness, though, I'm winging this based on a rather sketch verbal description. If you have ever seen a depiction, or an extant kaga chochin, I would love to know.

I'm sure I do, but I'll have to hook up the scanner first. Let me finish this translation project (I hope only a couple more days) and I'll go digging in the books.

Soooo... this would be a good time to say "look what I found for you?" LEDs I got. Live candles still throw more light, so having the option to use both was part of my design concept. OK, let me rephrase/explain. I know you have LED lights. And I understand that your design is dual-purpose. I was thinking a little more... "outside the box". That site had LED candles with wax bodies to bridge the gap, i.e., allow one to use LED candles of different sizes in an environment where appearance matters but flame/heat are unacceptable. I looked at it as "giving you a third option". What if you wanted to do a paper-less version of the lantern? A "real" candle would look better. Some of their candles had multiple LED's per candle, presumably for increased light output. I also thought that LED tapers had their possibilities, as they would elevate the light source inside the lantern, possibly giving you better overall illumination when using the LED option by getting the origination point of the light off the bottom of the lantern. I had my reasons for my original suggestion, and I was looking a ways beyond the simple LED tealight. Gomen nasai for the misunderstanding / not adequately explaining myself the first time. - Imagawa

A "real" candle would look better. A real candle does look better. I have yet to see an LED that behaves with the randomness of flame - and a firelit world is admittedly one of the attractions of this SCA thing we do. I have two different kinds of LED votives. I have LED pillars. I even tried wrapping LED mini tap-lights of the sort you stick to a closet wall in amber cellophane at Estrella (which were plenty bright and resulted in an oddly greenish glow). No problem. Alternatives are never a bad thing. I plan on stabilizing whatever light goes in the bottom of the basket with some "earthquake wax." That way the candle cup/candle/LED/Eye of Sauron/glowing alien entity won't slide around or fall over should the lantern sway in the breeze or be jarred. What is earthquake wax, you say? earthquakeinfo.com/QHputtydetailQH.html

If you're not happy with store bought stuff and are handy with low power electrics, www.instructables.com has tons of LED projects, including flickering candles and solar powered lanterns.

The lambent glow of flames, Their spark smiles in eyes brightened By nightfall's promise. Who would not wish to live in A world lit only by fire?

Note to anyone contemplating the use of Synskin synthetic shoji "paper." It's fiberglass. Use care in handling it. I picked up a splinter while cutting it, immediately put on a pair of work gloves and had no more problems.

The lanterns survived their first event in fine style. I had votive candles burning all evening both days. I checked sides and bottoms of each basket several times on Friday evening - they remained stone cold to the touch.
They also looked gorgeous.

I'm so pleased with how these came out, I think I'm going to make a couple more. Nothing says, "Come enjoy a cup of cheer" quite like bright lanterns!
It was pure dumb luck that I wandered into Genji Antiques during the Cherry Blossom Festival to browse around and they had one. It's probably no older than 19th century if I had to guess, but it was still interesting to see the similarities and differences between it and what I came up with.

Old lanterns are getting rather beat up, time to test a new prototype! This was based on one I got to look at in an antique shop with a shade that could be lifted to so one could light the candle inside. Base is 2 7" craft rounds glued together, 1/4" wooden dowels for the handle struts and another strip of 1/2" craft dowel for the handle. Lantern body is made of pre-woven chair cane and Synskin faux shoji "paper" which is actually fiberglass. farm9.staticflickr.com/8168/7491050548_01742e72d6_z.jpg[/img]Current lighting source these days are battery powered LED tap lights wrapped in orange tissue paper. It keeps the West Kingdom Constables happy if I have to leave camp and the tissue paper actually gives the light the right color.
