I decide to pass on the yumi like bow :-) Now I found 4 bamboo Yumi on ebay, item numbers: 7325479434, 7325491792, 7325492098, 7325492514.
All are from the same vendor in Japan. Do you know the seller, is it a safe buy ?
Do you think they are usable ? Any special care I should be aware of ? Is it hard to find a string and arrows for these ? Would you consider it a good buy, and if so up to what price ?

cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20840&item=7158088349&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVWJust so that you know, tomodachi, that is not a real yumi. It is only vaguely shaped like a yumi, but the facts that A) IT IS OAK B) It is meant to be shot off of the first knuckle and not the thumb, C) Its general shape is only slightly similar to a yumi. I am not putting the bow down - it might be fun to shoot, and it is slightly closer to a yumi than to a long bow, but it is not a yumi. Sighs... Date

Well I'm looking for an unexpensive Yumi to try the japanese style of shooting, then I could see if I like this enough to pay more for a good bow.
Why ? Is it only about the lenght or is it the design ?
Yes, the advertising does say "Yumi style".
So what is the lowest price I could expect to pay for a beginner Yumi, and where can I find it ?

Michimasa-dono, check here www.kyudo.com/asahiam-yumi.html to see typical prices here in the states for cost and sizes of yumi. As for the bow from e-bay, generally single wood bows are "tillered" meanting that it has a certain flex or cast, and wants to shoot from one side or the other. Japanese shooting is traditionally done from the right side of the bow. This allows the hanare (release) to be proper, with practice, allowing the weapon to swing around the left hand and the string striking the outside of the left arm. Shooting from the left will not allow this. I hope this helps in some way. Date

I've seen this bow before. Date is quite right: it's NOT a yumi. It's a longbow with asymmetrical limbs. If you look at a real yumi, it's an asymmetrical recurve. In other words, the tips bend slightly in the opposite direction of the main body of the bow, allowing it to store energy differently than a longbow. www.ancientarchery.com/Resources/Longbow%20004.jpgIf you look at the shapes of the drawn and undrawn bows you can see the difference. I have bought several pieces of armour from Daimyou54eb. Al l have been as described (note the numerous pictures). Items have been packaged very well. Their english is not very good.
He says the bows will shoot and I believe him. But has a limbed turned somewhat? Does it shoot straight? What are the poundages?
I am also looking at these bows and will be asking these questions. If there is one or two that you are going to bid on , let me know here, so I don't bid against you. Likewise, my ebay id is 'ronbroberg' and I will post the numbers of any I might bid. Past experience suggests these bows will go for $300+.

I would have tought he was safe from his ebay profile, but it is always good to know someone who actually bought from him.
Hummm.... I really know NOTHING about Yumi, so I would really appreciate to know if you can get more infos from the seller. I can look at the pics but have no knowledge to decide which one would be better then the other, they all look the same to me....
I would need at least a shipping cost idea before bidding. It really is a long piece and I'm scare it could cost a lot to ship from Japan to Canada. I will ask about this and maybe wait to see if you get some details (if you don't mind) before I decide if I will bid on one of them.
Do you mean $300 final auction on ebay, or do you mean that it is what it would be worth elsewhere.
Michimasa
P.S. I was injure recently while fighting rattan, and it really look like I won't be able to fight again ( a real shame since I had almost finish my japanese armour kit and could not even try it on the field) so I really need something to compensate, that's why I'm thinking on trying Kyudo. But I can't spend a lot of money at it so those price are really appealing (while they are still low of course).

Their is even a new one this morning (7325492716). This one seem lackered (sp?) and has the advantage of having a string, event though it don't look like it could be use (the string) it has the advantage of giving a sample of what the string lenght and size should be.... I would guess that on the pictures the string is mounted in rest mode since it don't match the notch on both end ? Michimasa P.S. Just got a response from the seller and he estimate the shipping from 300$ to 400$.... that is much too high for me. I wonder if there a slower but cheaper way of shipping it from Japan then UPS

The same seller estimated $15 for this bow: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7311686836

What is a yazutsu ? Did you got details on poundages and other details ? You say 15$ shipping from Japan to US ? Are you sure about this ? He say he ship UPS, I got to UPS site and verified a shipping cost from a random address from Japan to my address and got a 150$ estimate.... Best of luck to you on your bids... Please keep me posted. Michimasa

Okay ... I ended up with nothing.
The seller confirmed she expected shipping would be ~$300, I asked about her earlier quote for a bow. She told me she had not shipped one at that time and did not EMS would not take such items so she had just quoted a standard EMS weight charge.
The set of 4 matched + 1 extra arrows went for ~$240
The bows went for about $220-240. Much lower than the last several bows I have seen on ebay. I was the second highest bidder on several of them. I suspect that someone else had the same idea that I did ... buy as many as possible so that shipping charges would be less per piece. Then resell the extras.

Hummm... too bad. Will keep looking. Do you know about Don Symanski from Ryuko Kyudojo that I mention in another post ? I've been told he makes Bamboo Yumi from 450$ US and Ya at 17$ US... if you ever buy a Yumi from US maker, would you let me know about it ? It would be easier for me then to risk having it sent from Japan... Thanks
