Not so much a motto, but an idea: write it all out in hiragana and see who starts to giggle. Then behead them first.

The ones that I've scribbled up but have yet to attach are:
"Newbie" (which I translated as 'New guy', and intend to stencil on a headband) "Charging cures samsara." "Hesitate and die." (I had a serious moment... I'm better now, I swear.) "Shinjo bushi for life." (Reference to the Legend of the 5 Rings RPG, and how I'm always the one playing a Shinjo family samurai.) Oh yes... and the one I feel I should consistently use unless I'm havinga fit of humor:
"Samurai hunter."
Because I look for Japanese personas at wars and go for them whenever possible. Cuz two samurai fighting is a good thing.

Unless the university jumps up and slaps me about the head and shoulders with something unexpected, I am indeed.

"If you've thought to rent the helmet beforehand, the bats will not bother you as you cross the lake of fire." (gakked from a stand-up many moons ago)
Can you run backwards?
Close shave now, or bushi later!
I fight like a girl.

I have one on my banner that even had my mercenary group giggling hysterically.
"Bite me!" Yeah, they have an interesting sense of humor. But what does one do when your device is a grizzly bear track?
I love all the mottos. they're fantastic.

At your service! hehehe I also have the distinction of being the only fighter at Great Western War to bravely go where no one else has before and become... wait for it.... the Defender of Little Stinkers Everywhere! My colors are black and white. So I simply painted my helmet black with a white stripe down the center. *wicked grin*

Now, for all you war oriented nuts out there, I have a question:
Does the Sashimono device get painted on Both sides of the Fabric.. or just one? Inquiring minds want to know.

Okay, I snuck off to Stephen Turnbull's site and e-mailed him with the question of Sashimonos and this is the reply he sent me, for those who are curious: The answer depends on the material of the flag. Normally the dyeing of the design would mean that the image would go right through and be seen as a mirror image from the other side. Otherwise it could be embroidered on, in which case if it was a charcater, say, it would be embroidered both sides to be readable. I suspect the former case is normal, I have seen modern banners made in this way with lost wax. But always the sashimono would be two sided. With best wishes, Stephen Turnbull P.S. Mr. Turnbull knows armor and militaria. However, after reading his response I have to think that by "embroidery" he may also mean applique.
"Lost wax" is a metal casting process. He probably means some sort of resist paste (or wax) dyeing technique - which would result in a design that showed through both sides of the fabric.

Actually, I think he was talking about Batik. *grins* I've done that once.. a very long time ago. Heh, I think I was 12 or 13 at the time.
It could work and the effect turns out looking fantastic.
