Otagiri-dono,
There's another pair up on eBay that might interest you if they don't end up being bid into the stratosphere: item# 7394212903. Pretty too.

It looks like a saddle blanket and tail dressing. Thats my best guess, a few more photos form the seller would be helpful, or a better closeup shot.

A bridle without the bits? ViewItem&item=7395490160 That looks more like a plow harness to me. But the first one is for certain a saddle blanket, but I have no idea what the other little piece is. Its wayyyyy to short to be a tail dressing, maybe its an extention for the front part of the saddle, did the Japanese use saddle horns?

Is this the piece that sits near the "adams apple"? Probably for stirrup attachment, dont hold me to that, but the left strap is rotted out where it folds over. And yes, crapola, at one point it was probably very pretty and served to attach many things, now, not so much.

Some stuff from: www.hataya.co.jp/bagu.htmlBridle bits: These are bigger than they look (about 40") and they look a lot like the stirrup straps (chikara gawa?) on this saddle: So I think your right, Ryokai-dono.

Horses don't have Adam's apples. Their larynxes are up underneath the point where the neck meets the jaw. First clue: www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/ladylever/collections/saddleandharness.aspshows a saddle displayed with a similar shaped strap laid over the saddle's seat - including that peculiar shaped bit which fits rather conveniently over the slot in the seat. And here's another: Another clue: the auction lists the dimensions as 42" long and 11" wide at the widest point. I think this is what you hang your abumi from. S.

And that fringe piece in the back of your pic closely resembles the first 'oddity' I posted. Maybe the smaller fringed piece hangs under the tail? Or would that be too ... umm ... dangerous?

The stableboys should be beaten thoroughly for leaving tack in untidy piles. I'm going to guess that the large piece with the tassels is part of the atsubusa (breastplate or breastcollar). While it's partly ornamental, some horses need breast plates or cruppers or both to keep their saddles in the optimum position. The size is right, the shape is right and it appears to have attachment rings in the right spot. S.
