did the Japanese use any kind of siege engines?

They did, though not to the same extent as the continentals did. There are quite a few illustrations of siege towers, cloud ladders and stuff in Japanese illustrations. Pre-gunpowder artillery on the other hand, is limited to the sporadic use of just small traction catapults and the mysterious Oyumi. Japanese siege artillery really became a factor in Japanese warfare only with the introduction of gunpowder cannon.

Noble Cousin! Greetings from Solveig! There are quite a few illustrations of siege towers, cloud ladders and stuff in Japanese illustrations. Could you provide actual illustrations? While the Japanese had "fortresses" and Heiankyou was supposed to have a wall, I'm not so sure that they had much in the way of castles until the sixteenth century.
