Another weekend, another project. A tate. This is made from a 2'x4' slab of pre-assembled pine. Cost about $13. One 8' piece of 2"x2" and some scrap plywood and scrap dowel makes this another "under $20" project. I should put my kamon on it sometime. At 2'x4' its a little wider and a little shorter than it could be. One reference I came across suggested 20"x60".

I've thought about making one of those as well. Do you know what the rules of using them on the field are? Could you set it up on one side of a bridge to shoot over?

You should DEFINITELY put your kamon on it. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen it... Is this all for Estrella?

Excellent! Your camp will look splendid at this Estrella, Otagiri-dono. Yagyu-dono, you will need to check the marshal's handbook for you kingdom (or the war treaty, if it is an event that has one, like Estrella) to see what scenarios might allow tate on the field. They are potentially hazardous - if your position is over-run, it could be damaged in the press and the debris (like a broken 2x2) may cause harm. If you are given the opportunity to field some tate, be sure to take precautions to insure the safety of the combatants. Yoshi

Sir Yoshi gives good advice. Always check with your marshals before introducing new objects on the field. If I planned on bringing this into combat, I would make a few changes. Round off the corners. Use bolts instead of nails. Replace the plywood hinge plates with 1" boards.
You got to imagine a 300 pound guy in armor tripping on it and another 300 pound guy falling on both of them.
I was with the Yama Kaminari when we took tate with us onto the field two years ago. It worked best if each archer had an attendent to move the tate and feed the archers arrows. I'll see if I can dig up some pics later.

"Estrella War we've fought each year, knee-deep in Aten’s dirt While friend and foe alike we try to keep from getting hurt, But hopes for Western safety would be to avail— 900 pounds of Atenveldt came down on Sir Alail." The knee surgery and attendant rehab were as epic as the bard's retelling. history.westkingdom.org/Bardic/LeahRaedaelf/900PoundsOfAtenveldt.htm

www.yamakaminari.com/Projects/tate/tate_project.htmlI think the Yama Kaminari have about ten or so tate. We edge them like shield for when we take them out to the field for heavy combat, but I personally remove the edging for when I use it to shoot live target arrows on the range. They are useful at the start of a battle, but once the flow of the armies begins, they are cumbersome and less useful. Date

Yeah, I figured as much. That was why I was thinking primarily of bridge battles where they could provide cover for archers on the banks next to the bridge.
I have some design ideas in my head that I think I could get the marshallette to sign off on, but I don't have time before Estrella so they will have to wait. I will probably make them about the same time as the Chinese man portable ballista. ;D

Okay, I have a question about decorating the Tate. Is it allowable to paint the background a solid color then add colored stripes and a device? My roomie loves the look of the Tate and we're trying to figure out how to paint it to make it look like a Mon.
Suggestions or comments would be helpful. If this needs to go elswhere, please, use the Bokken on my head.

Date-dono,
I like the "T" design of your clan's tate's leg.
Does the top of the leg act as a stop and prevents the leg from swinging too far out? Does the design come from a historical description/image or is it the product of superior Yama Kaminari engineering?
