Holy Kasane no irome, Batman!
I just got invited to teach at the Known World Costuming & Rattan Symposium in Calontir on Columbus Day weekend. On both European (specifically ladies' sideless surcote) and Japanese (kosode).
Eep. Now to figure out if I can logistically manage it.

Update -
They've started posting the schedule for the Costuming portion of the Symposium and Japan has three, count 'em, three classes!
Saturday 10/8/05 at 10:00AM, Kass McGann is presenting an overview of women's Japanese clothing.
Sunday 10/9/04 at 9:00AM, THL Takahara Otoshi is doing an overview of men's Japanese clothing.
Sunday 10/9/04 at 11:00, I'm teaching "Kosode Made Simple."
Oh, and that Jehanne chick will be teaching about the sideless surcote Saturday at 11:00.

Reminder, Known World Costuming and Rattan Symposium is Columbus Day Weekend in Calontir. www.dunard.org/KnownWorldCostuming/Index.htmDuke Paul of Bellatrix and Earl Brion Thornbird are two of the keynote speakers for the Rattan portion of the proceedings. Three, count 'em, three classes on Japanese clothing: mine, one by Kass McGann, one by Takahara Otoshi. Besides, me and Kass in the same place at the same time? Mayhem WILL ensue. I soo wish I could make it up for that but too much going on and not enough money *sigh* I have stacks of fabric i need to get around to making into some new garb, i sooo need a few more pair of hakama.

The only reason I'm going is that when they invited me to teach I was able to find a relatively inexpensive direct flight.

 Alas, even though the event is in my home kingdom, I have to work this weekend and cannot attend. (The site is not nearby--about 7 and a half hours drive from where I live). I should have very much enjoyed meeting you, sharing poetry, and showing you the kosode and uchikake I made via your instructions! Ki no Torahime ps: I've been busy and away from SCA-doings. Makiwara-dono, is that a new name I see?

Yes please do inform us of all the goings on! Ive been meaning to sit down and try to tackle a fan using your instructions, now that winter is on its way and eventing and dance season will be slowing down soon I can concentrate on my main persona =) again FINALLY. If your even in Ansteorra drop me a line =)

Hime, don't rush right out and make a fan yet. I recently acquired a couple of real sensu and I have to go back to the drawing board on the design. Mine are WAY flimsy. Saionji I was surprised at how stiff sensu are. My guess is they use a particularly hard bamboo (and probably the harder outer layers). The fan paper itself feels almost like cardboard... it even feels like card stock and looks like cardstock does when folded. They also give a good snap when shut. It will be interesting to see what you come up with! |
