Otagiri, you should add a first aid kit to your packing list too.

If Gulf Wars was an absolutely amazing event, it was made doubly so by the presence of Otagiri Tatsuzou. We really enjoyed the flavor and grace he added to our camp. From the tea ceremony to the Battlefield to the drinks enjoyed beside the fire, Otagiri was a gentleman, a warrior, and a fine example of chivalry.
It was an absolute pleasure camping with you. You have shown your grace, your fighting prowess, and even your intestinal fortitude by being able to put up with prolonged exposure to our pirate-like banter.
You are always welcome in any Kitemitsu camp.

While I was dead and wishing to still be in the fray, I looked to the field to see Otagiri still fighting. Otagiri is sieging the castle at Gulf Wars, violently attacking through the crenalations with his spear, when he is circumstantially struck in thye arm. Without hesitation, he drops the wounded arm and directs his attention towards an archer aiming out of one of the crenalations. He adjusts his spear to an overhand fighting position and dashes towards the oblivious archer. With a quick series of thrusts, the archer is thrown from his firing position back into the castle (where I assume he died.) Otagiri continued to fight with a spear in only 1 arm causing a great amount of disarray before he was finally killed. I watched from the field side in awe at his confidence, even in the face of overwhelming odds and and a missing limb.
*Jingasa's off to you Otagiri...

Count Raito Sir Koredono Sir Tomoyuki Sir Takamatsu
(more Japanese knights than you can shake a rattan stick with thrusting tip at ... )
This was my first glance at Sir Takamatsu ... that man has more energy than any 4 normal men. Just hearing his "rebel yells" following some line charges during the ravine battle was enough to invigorate you.
Unfortunately, I had little more time with any of them except a passing word or two on the battlefield. I need to better organize my evening wandering ... (not that I'm complaining - I had better than normal nighttime wanderings)

I managed to capture a few action shots, and your terrific stare. 'Scuse me while I guffaw in an unladylike manner. The Stare bears a disturbing resemblance to something my sister's Mysterious Face, an expression that reached its' height of popularity when she was about four.

Wow. Gulf Wars. What a trip.
It started with Saturday night packing in several inches of new snow, trying to keep the inside of my van, thereby the mattress and futon, dry. I had wanted to take the day to pack, but my father-in-law decided to celebrate his b-day on Sat so we didn't get back until late.
On Sunday I added the walls of my ger to the top of the van. One of my problems at Estrella with my 12'x12' EZ up was the way the wind snapped the plastic tarp walls over and over and over again on Saturday night. One of the reasons I was done with the event Sun am and not willing to stay for the Sunday battles. This time I thought I would set up the ger walls to support the plastic walls - that and a few more rope supports might secure the walls against the wind. Since my ger walls break into three sections that took care of three 12'x12' walls.
My wife looked at the packed van and asked where my table was? My little black, square oriental table I found at some discount store. I replaced the glass inserts with light-weight wood ones and have dragged it to a few events. So I take a few more minutes and strap it on.
And off I go. Google said 20 hours. It took me 28 with a 5 hour nap outside Dallas. Thank goodness for Google directions - I would never had made it through Dallas. Four roads merging ... one highway breaking into 5 directions ... it was amazing and confusing and I was glad I drove through at 1 am so that there was almost no traffic. But I did not have reverse directions. I didn't think I could make it back the other way - not at first try. I found a rest stop about an hour outside of Dallas, popped my contacts, and went to sleep. Woke up to torrential rains. Grabbed my straw hat to hit the privies. Took me an hour to drive out of and the radio reported a drowning. I worried that these rains would hit Gulf Wars ... worried about that quite a bit, not just because of my probably inadequate shelter but for everyone else, for these kind of rains would wash away just about everything except a ger.
Cruised on down the road and bumped into a highway closing accident outside of Shreveport. An illegal crossing of the median and a few lucky turns got me onto a parallel, local road and around the closure. Other than that, my trip to the site was uneventful. Pulled into troll about 4 pm and found my way to the "Southern Consortium" site.
First guy I found was Master Geoffery himself. He helped me pick out a spot in back of the camp and I had my site pretty much set up by 6. One thing about EZ-ups, they are easy. I was concerned that the "center-pole" roof (which is braced by cross-beams, it does not extend to the floor) would allow rain to pool along the sides and had rigged a 16 rope net which extended from the center to the sides and staked to the ground. This gave me a little more "bracing" for the roof and I hoped would force the water to drain instead of pool. Even though I had water-proofed the roof, I hadn't tested it nor did I know if the ropes would wick moisture in - so I added a light plastic paint tarp I had picked up at Walmart on the way down. So EZ-up, water-proofing, rope netting, plastic walls, yurt wall, and plastic tarp - even so, it didn't take long to set up. The final line of protection - I left the mattress, a blanket, several sets of clothes, and some towels in the van. The Consortium offered me dinner which I gladly accepted and my first day was done.

Nice kuzasuri, as always. ;D I believe that is Sir Koredono (must get him to dish on his diet tips, he's lost half a person since last year) and HM Christopher of Aethelmearc:

that is in fact Sir Koredono. I thought it might be - the fact that he's lost a lot of weight made me look twice to be sure. Is it weird I know so many people via the internet and photos? Though I'm hoping to remedy that somewhat this summer. Pennsic is on my calendar. ;D
