I guess I'm in the minority, but I regularly drink soda at my favorite Japanese restaurant. Depending on my mood I'll drink soda, tea, or sake--but then, that's what I did in Japan so I guess, for me, there's no incongruity.
Then again, I also have a tendency to order only the 'appetizers' and create my own 'ichiju-sansai' meal.

I just don't drink soda anymore. Well, I drink seltzer and sparkling water. I like the carbonation, not the syrupy goo. Once in a while I drink ramune, though. And I'll drink sugar-sweetened soda. Both are far less gooey than mass-market American soda.

Soooo, back to natto.
The Japanese/Korean grocery here had small single serving containers of it in their refrigerator section (Hime brand). It was frozen and included a sauce and mustard packet. I let it thaw, and then tried it. The odor is reminiscent of the undertones of soy sauce, but the flavor is harsher (to me), and I just can't get past the slime. Even the mustard and sauce didn't make it better.
The slime reminds me very much of a lubricant frequently used for creating slime and snot (j-lube) for movie effects, and like j-lube it sticks to everything and is hard to wash off. The flavor isn't really my problem, it's the texture. The beans and the slime are unpleasant to me. They seem to get slimier as you stir them, sort of like when you molest a hagfish.

It's not a question of incongruity with me. I just don't drink soda anymore. Healthiest thing I ever did was to stop drinking soda.* It helped me lose 30 pounds last year. I mostly drink water and tea (hot or iced) these days with the occasional beer, hard cider, sake or wine here and there. *I'm one of those Nutrasweet headache people, so I don't even bother with diet.
