I had the great fortune of meeting Mojuko, one of the moderators of the IG forum, for dinner last night. She performed an abbreviated tea ceremony for her partner, my mother and I, and then we dove into the All-You-Can-Eat sushi ;D Yes, cognitive dissonance (as Mokurai put it!) of a Geisha serving two Heian noblewomen tea. And yes, tea and sushi and Geisha aren't proper for the Heian era. But we had a fantastic time! I wore kurenai no nioi, essence of scarlet, to celebrate the New Year, and a plum-pink padded uwagi which is a proper color for Feb/March. She wore a black kimono with plum blossoms for the season. Enjoy! (You'll have to cut-and-paste the link, sorry) www.flickr.com/photos/23584908@N07/sets/72157603895548941/

Well done. Looks like Mom enjoyed herself too. Is that sake and/or plum wine I see sitting in the corner? Girl's night out, eh? ;D Thanks for sharing the pictures and your experience. Did you go to the sushi place in garb? - Imagawa

That's sake Mojuko's friend Robb is wearing green, he kindly used my camera. I went in whiteface, kosode and nagabakama, adding the rest of the robes in the ladies room. The other diners stared as I whirled past, though.

Er, no, I've been doing sake shopping. For Estrella. You know. The blue bottle is a Momokawa sake. The one with the red and gold label is, a Hakatsuru sake. I think. Now where can I get a half a dozen yards of whatever Robb's kataginu was made of?

The sake, dinner and the company was amazing...the server, very disappointing. Having food rudely delivered in the middle of a tea ceremony. Ah well, this is not exactly the center of culture. Makiwara, rumor has it that I will be in the bay area in May...dinner?

Ah well, this is not exactly the center of culture. Makiwara, rumor has it that I will be in the bay area in May...dinner? While the server may or may not have been rude, you normally eat the meal prior to taking tea in a chaji. For that matter, even in more abbreviated chakai, 点心 (tenshin) snacks are served prior to tea, not after tea.

The server simply did not understand what was happening. The sweets were served prior to the tea... Tea ceremony was done first, because we would not have had time to do it after, nor would it have been very appealing after the quantity of sushi we consumed. A picture from the evening.

Rather a lot of food can be consumed during the kaiseki portion of a chaji. Regardless, I do not understand how the time element worked with your party. I suppose that you might have eaten so much sushi so as to prevent tea consumption if you reversed the order. One more thing, after-party parties are rather common in Japan.
