so here's the sake update...
...while I'm (faking) red-in-the-face.
We just nailed off a few bottles. That's the sake. There's also wine in the mix, but we're not here to talk about that.
Hakutsuru Brewery Sayuri nigorizake (pink bottle) is nice, but a bit weak. Sweet-ish, very delicate, but a bit innocuous. Not thrilling.
100 Poems. Saionji-dono swears by this, and she's right. We had a bottle, and she's got her empty bottle back (we had to empty it) and another beautful box. It's rich, has that "compost heap" nose going (in a good way) and is amazing. It's not the best we had tonight.
Shichiken Junmai Ginjo (unknown brewer, imported by Pacific International) is smoother than the 100 Poems. Fantastic. Fantastic. Oy, fantastic.
So the big winner of the night? Tamanohikari. Holy Mother of God! I'm looking for an appropriate oath involving Amatseru. Wahu! This is something that compares favorably with the Oni Karakuchi (and I like extra-dry). Tamanohikari is the name of the brewer, and there's a big white sticker in English over a big white sticker in Japanese. Smooth as glass. Light. Tasty. A party in my mouth and everybody else's. Big gold box. If you like junmaidaginjo you must try this.

No, we're really not hammered. We're really not hammered. I can still type.
Bottle #4. If I haven't lost count. I probably have.
Otokoyama Tokubetsu Junmai Ginju.
Good. Not 100 Poems good. Not Tamakohohikari good. But so good. Not requiring oaths about the queen of the sun. But so good. Better than good when turning pink good.
(Yes, slightly hammered, but it's appropriate. It is good enough. Good enough that mistaking my sake cup for my mouse isn't bad.)

while on the topic of sake, while I was getting ready for my event this past weekend, I was making food and sake run on my way out of town, and the liquer store I got my haiku from had some mini bottles of some kind of sake (the kind that look like an oversize egg and comes with it's own cup like gekikans "cap ace") the bottle had pink labeling, (sorry bovil reminded me of it)and spoke of a floral theme (and I think I remember it saying something about cherry blossom flavoring) but it cost as much as my haiku, so I decided to pass on it. now since it will be several weeks before I am near that liquer store again I am kindda regretting not grabbing a bottle to try... I just wish I had a clue what the name was still, but it is 2 bottles of haiku, and the better part of a week now since I saw it, and I can not remember the name to save myself.

I've not seen a floral-infused sake in the "cap ace" style individual bottles. Marumoto brewing makes Hana Hou Hou Shu pink rose-and-hibiscus infused sparkling sake. I think that might be the "girliest stuff ever" that Saionji-dono mentions some of the time. Haven't tried it yet.

The girly pink sake has been identified: Hana Awaka, bottled by Ozeki. Goes down like 7-Up, this is the sake equivalent of the wine cooler.
Last night we also had some Shirakami that was fairly nice, both straight and with a splash of the St. George's absinthe.

So to add to the sake list (from yesterday's West Kingdom A&S Tourney picnic) Oni Karakuchi continues to be a fave-rave of the people who have tried it. We brought a bottle of Shirouma Ishizuchi from Ishizuchi Shuzou (it's one up from the bottom, with the white horse on the black label). We, of course, nicknamed it "Horse" for expediency's sake. It's a nigori sake, very rough filtered. There were tiny "chunks" in the rice starch cloud. There was a hint of bitterness at the finish that was rather nice. I think this may have just jumped ahead of Shirakawaga Sansanigori as my favorite nigori sake. We also brought a bottle of Hana Hou Hou Shu, the other girly pink sparkling sake. The general opinion of the picnic was that they preferred this to the Hana Awaka; it wasn't quite as soda-poppy. It's still very girly and pink.

This was a gift from an owner of a Thai Restaraunt after I was eating dinner and their power went out. I mentioned I was an electrician (among other things) and that I would be happy to help. So after about 5 min I restored power and found the culprit . A chiller motor had fried and knocked everything out . He was very thankfull and insisted he pay for my famillies dinner and gave me this beautiful bottle of Saki off the shelf of his Sushi bar. I didnt let him pay for dinner ( it was $1oo.oo ) since it was less than 10 min of work but I did take the Sake!!!! I snapped a quick picture of the bottle and case than opened it and shared with every one at the restaraunt including the owner . It was the best I have ever had ( I havent had many ) . The owner wouldnt tell me how much it costs so I will have to try and find it. The blue ribbon in the corner says " Monde Selection , Brussels World Selection of Quality 2007 2006 " what ever that means . It goes very well with pho and shrimp sticks .
