Okay, here's the problem. www.pictavia.org/SCAevents/St_Corrigans_09_01/tavern/MVC-373F.JPGI'm the one right next to the big guy. As you can see, I'm wearing wax hardened Lamellar with an attempt at thigh protection. It's been working fine, however, I'm wondering how I can disguise the Lamellar so it looks more Japanese? I'm planning on stepping back from being a Heavy fighter to indulging in a bit of Long Distance killing as a Combat Archer. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch. Diane

Please do not take this the wrong way--the chief way I would disguise your armour would be to remake it. I'm sorry, but the lacing, if I'm seeing it correctly, is not a Japanese pattern that I'm aware of--it almost looks like it could be Chinese, from the distance of the picture, but6 I can't say for certain.
Now, that may not be acceptable, so I'll try to propose something that might be more useful. Try using it underneath some other garb. For instance, you could create an extra-large hitatare kamishimo and hakama and wear those over the armour. More appropriate might be to create a dofuku such as monks might wear and throw that on over your armor. A koromo and kesa would make you look like a more religious figure--not sure if you could do something to your helmet at the same time.
I guess it depends on what you want to do--I don't think the armour can be 'disguised' easily. You might be able to cover it up.

Well, its the old Cariadoc pattern for Lamellar. the original. Trust me, Ii-dono, I'm not going to take it the wrong way. hehehe I did ask for suggestions. The problem is, I don't have time to redo what I have. Heh. If I could, trust me, I would. I was thinking of the Jinbaori, but that would get in the way of combat archery, I think. Or at least foul the arrows when I try to get to them from the quiver Unless I start looking for plastic barrels and Japanese print cloth, I'm sort of stuck.

I appreciate the effort you are trying to make Jinbaori came in many shapes and sizes. That said, they were necessarily for 'fighting' in as much as directing a fight (the more I look, the more I see jinbaori in a 'fight' when a general is personally attacked, and then it is within range of a held weapon, generally not an archery duel). Also, without a lot of other Japanese accoutrement it might not look right. Here are some other things that could help: 1) Suneate (or at least kyahan to simulate them). With hakama to cover your knees and then suneate, it would at least add to the illusion. 2) Try to convert the western helmet into a more Japanese one. Here's my attempt: flickr.com/photos/tatsushu/1510925158/in/set-72157602312753525/It was a regular, unpainted spun-top. I simply added the the shikoro, which is plastic--specifically black plastic from a trash can: it was easy to cut and bend, and I don't need it to really add protection. The hardest part was drilling and deburring the holes to run the lacing through. This wasn't meant as a means of making an authentic looking helmet--it was an attempt to make a TSCA helmet look a little more like a Japanese helmet until I could get a better kit together. FYI, the maille on the front is a requirement that was added on since I've had the helm, and a nodowa just wasn't going to cut it. If you are industrious you could probably add fukigaeshi and/or maedate to it of some sort--just a thought. -Ii

Oh I LOVE that.... it instantly breaks up the line of the helmet and gives it a more of a *look* This is what my helmet looks like... at GWW 5: www.pictavia.org/SCAEvents/GWW_10_01/between_battles/GWW10_06_01_103.jpgYes, that's a black helmet with a white stripe down the center. I may need to drill three or four holes to tie it to the helmet, but I think I can do that. I may have to scrounge for plastic, though.

Okay, I have to ask. The guy in the middle. Is that thing actually legal? The helmet I mean. I'm looking at eye slots that appear to be way too large for fighting.

Yup, I have fought him a few times. I would guess that the eye holes fall right on the 1 in limit.

Heh. I'd be real Leery of having the eyeholes that close to my eyes. Then again, I really don't like having an enclosed face either. Hence my open faced Spangenhelm

his name is Bitor he is the warleader of the Tu-Chuck clan . his persona nationality is pagan LOL I believe id would have to ask him . Like 80% of stick jocks being "in period " is the last on his list hehehe. the eye holes are 7/8 of an inch , good guess , the actual molding and fabrication cost him close to $1000.00 . It is locked into place by the back of the helm similar to the way a mempo is connected . I tried it on but it is matched to his face so it didnt fit but it was surprisingly comfortable . it had gell foam strips to form fit it and pad it for impact . He said he has taken incredible amounts of abuse in crown tourney's and wars , since he is always a target LOL , and hasnt failed him yet . He is a great polearm fighter along with sword and board . He was comander of the adenvelt merc groups along with me and Raven the other guy in the photo . if you are interested you can contact him thru myspace profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=76565954

personally, i want to know if it's historically accurate. It's not - which does not mean it's not an impressive piece of armoring. The Tuchux are a group who've based their game on a series of fantasy novels by John Norman set in a world called Gor. www.tuchux.com/ They are one of several non-SCA groups who attend some of the larger SCA interkingdom wars such as Pennsic and Estrella.

Oh, i did not know that. i have never attended a war. But i agree, it is definitely an impressive piece. I think i shall have to add John Norman to my "to buy" list

*much rolling of eyes* My husband had the entire series at one time. *shudder* I told him if he ever.. EVER handed me another one of those, I was going to use him for a Pell! Then hang him up and use him for archery practice!
You know, he wouldn't believe me until he went to a fighter practice and saw what I REALLY did at them??
