Gentles,
I was asked by a new person if I could find a set of Japanese gear for SCA use.
I asked around, and got the recommendation that I ask here. I don't know the new person very well yet, but I do like them.
Please respond here or to my email address. Email is certainly my preferred method.

...I was asked by a new person if I could find a set of Japanese gear for SCA use... Freiman?? from the archive? There are a couple of members here that were producing Japanese armor, I have not heard any comments of late though. (pipe up peeps!) Mykaru just posted he will be producing some helms.. his stuff rocks, it is a bit pricey for an intoductory kit, but an outstanding value when you consider the quality you are getting. Most of us here have made our own kits, and would be happy to help with guidance, if that is an option you wish to explore. BTW if this is the good minstrel, is this person in the states or overseas? If in the states, one of us is bound to be close enough to help out in a hands on capacity for you as well. -Takeda

I think that I have found one of your kindred spirits. He is one of those guys who is really in love with Medieval Japan, and knows the names of everything and all that. He almost cried the other night when he found out that Black Hydra Armoury was on hiatus. I do Anglo-Saxon, and I have enough problems keeping up with the research in that, especially with the Museum of London dribbling out tiny bits of info on the new Prittelwell dig. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for somebody who soul is inspired by the Japanese stuff. So, I had to come here for help for him. With European gear, it wouldn't be hard to find him a used bucket. Quality Japanese gear is harder to find used. And thanks, freiman

Well met and welcome! Finding a hat for your man is one of the more daunting prospects of doing Japanese... There are a limited number of sources producing, and it tends that those that do either; also do western and have longish waiting lists or; tend to produce them on their own schedule and put them up for sale when complete. Now here are a couple of solutions: Construct one him/yourself: It is not realy a hard process, if you have the ability to build a spangenhelm, your already there. A simple 6 or 8 plate helm is pretty easy. Go through Tousandou classifieds: there have been a couple of helms here that were listed in the last couple of months, they may still be available. Dress up a western helm: Ok not the greatest idea, but a simple spun top or rounded bacinet can be done up to look reasonably appropriate: One method is to "monk-it-up" Throughout Japanese history there were several monastic orders that took up arms, they would frequently wear their monastic headcowls into battle. This trend declined in the latter part of period, but there were an increase in the number of lay-monks among the samurai... Early on, the clergy would take up arms, later on the military would take holy orders... (There are about 40 caviats to go with that statement, but suffice it to say it is reasonably true) So if he is doing early samurai (pre 1400) and would be interested in persuing the sohei/yamabushi route, he has the ability to hide quite a bit of his armor "sins" and still maintain a reasonable level of visual accuracy. If he chooses the latter period of time, he has the option to wear a wider variety of armor (and not cover it up) but still have a covered helmet. Here is a link to a thread about the cowls and western helms: tousando.proboards18.com/?board=garb&action=display&thread=1438&page=1Another way is to get a western bacinet thing that is reasonably close and slap on some shikoro (the neck guard)... here is a link to a picture of Ii-dono's converted helm: flickr.com/photos/tatsushu/1510925158/in/set-72157602312753525/If you are converting a western helm, the nice thing is that since it is already (conceivably) a passable helm, the add-ons to dress it up realy do not need to provide any protective qualities. For example Shikoro could be made out of leather, aluminum, or my personal favorite, plastic fro a ruber-maid type garbage can. (bends all over the place when hit, but springs right back) If you or he have not seen these, check out these great sites. They have lots of good info, and might give some ideas. www.sengokudaimyo.com <-Effingham's www.wodefordhall.com/ (This second one is our very own Makiwara's .. there are several sections of interest here as well) Also where abouts is this kindred soul located? we have a decent spread of regulars here, someone is bound to be reasonably close to him, and would be happy to help out another Nihonjin starting out. -Takeda I realy wish I could direct you better, but the truth is there is very little "off-the-shelf" for those of us that do Japanese

Otagiri-dono and Date-dono (he has on an armored sleeve with his uber-spiff hunting sugata) -Takeda (going for the smart alec of the week award)

Does Mykaru have any more jingasa? I think he was selling those for 150 - a solid deal on a NEW helm.

Doesn't count if they don't come with instructions. She who has been a smart alec longer than you have been alive. Heh. So that's why all those scrolls are so helpful, because of the instructions? Let's face it, you have an excellent site (and excellent taste) and so you get to be our resident guru on everything, whether you want to be or not -Ii

We're still looking for a good one for a decent price. If anybody had one in the back of the garage, that would be a wonderful thing.
If not, we can throw together a hundred years war French kit pretty easily in today's climate, but I think he has his heart set on going Japanese.

Noble Cousin! Greetings from Solveig! We're still looking for a good one for a decent price. If anybody had one in the back of the garage, that would be a wonderful thing. If not, we can throw together a hundred years war French kit pretty easily in today's climate, but I think he has his heart set on going Japanese. Maybe you should specify what you consider reasonable. There are a few folks who make and sell Japanese helmets.
