Excellent job, Saionji-hime! <ridiculous accent> Its a verreh nice!</ridiculous accent> I do have to admit, my internal 'image' is of one all Momoyama'd or Edo'd up in gold foil with a fairly busy scene of some sort, but the older simplicity has an elegance all its own. Have you considered the long tassels on either side? Personally, I think they'd end up being a pain to work with, and I am going to go image diving to see if I can even find evidence of them or not in the Heian period. -Ii Katsumori

Personally, I think they'd end up being a pain to work with, and I am going to go image diving to see if I can even find evidence of them or not in the Heian period. I did find an image on the internet ages ago - it was one of those hakubyo (black and white) drawings of a woman in court dress holding a fan and it did not have tassels. If I can find it again, I'll post it. Crap. The link is broken. And the Wayback Machine found a page, but the image is gone. It was from a picture scroll in the Saiku Historical Museum, that's about all I can tell you. My redrawing of it, in color is here: www.wodefordhall.com/makisensu.jpg

Hiogi 2.0 survived its first outing with flying colors. Aside from a tendency towards a quiet "whik, whik, whik" when being used to fan oneself briskly, many of the mistakes made on Version 1.0 are mostly ironed out. A rigid pivot pin of some sort would be ideal, but beading wire threaded and knotted through the pivot hole at each end does get the job done. (Do NOT attempt beading wire on the upper lacing holes. It's just too rigid and prevents the fan from folding properly. Yes, I did experiment with it.) It's also excellent for an impromptu game of peekaboo with a bored toddler during Coronation court. (Interestingly, none of the small children I interacted with yesterday seemed to be at all bothered by my elegant black teeth.) A number of people asked to hold it and play with it, and it behaved in a most satisfyingly fan-like manner. EDIT: The web version on what I did and how is now up: www.wodefordhall.com/hiogi.htm

Greetings, I am new to this forum and am currently finishing my latest project, a hiogi. I was having issues with the lacing, but worked that all out. I was interested in posting some of the pictures up here to get your honest and educated opinion. Here are the pictures of it so far... www.flickr.com/photos/29558539@N06/Thank you for any input.

Looks pretty good. What did you use for the pivot joint?

Nice, looking good.
I actually fiddled with mine this weekend. I have to pick up some paint. Well that is after I figure out what I want to paint on it...

When I was starting the project I found some old old metal wire for fence making. I used that after tempering it a little. And I used ink to paint it and varnished it when I was done.
Thank you for looking at it. ;D
